New Mexico FISHING REPORT
January 13, 2007
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Eagle Nest Lake: On January 13, Matt Pelletier and Kevin Long of Albuquerque finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively at a fishing derby. Matt weighed in 8 pounds 14 ounces which included nineteen perch, one 17.5 inch rainbow and one kokanee. He caught all of his fish on a Rapala ice jig. Kevin weighed in 7 pounds 1 ounce with his biggest fish being an 18.5 inch rainbow. He caught all his fish on a 1/32 ounce orange jig. First place information was not available at press time.
NORTHEAST AREA
COCHITI LAKE: The lake is covered with ice that is considered unsafe for fishing. For updated conditions, call the park rangers office at 505-465-2300.
CONCHAS LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: As of this past Monday the ice was about 17 inches thick. Fishing was very good using ice jigs tipped with wax worms or by themselves for perch and rainbow trout. For updated conditions, contact the state park office at 505-377-1594.
LAKE MALOYA/ LAKE ALICE: As of Monday the ice was over 12 inches thick at both lakes. They have been opened to ice fishing but the state park office at the lake has advised us to inform anglers that they will be fishing at their own risk. Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was very good for anglers using dough baits, rainbow power bait and small tube jigs. We had no reports from Lake Alice. MONASTERY LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
PECOS RIVER: As of Monday, water flow near Anton Chico was 24cfs.Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using small nymphs and salmon eggs. Fishing pressure was very light.
RED RIVER: Water flow as of Monday near Questa was 29cfs. Fishing was fair for anglers using small bead head nymphs and streamers.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at Embudo was 580cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners, streamers and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.
STORRIE LAKE: As of this past Monday, the lake was covered with a thin layer of ice and considered unsafe for ice fishing. For updated conditions call the state park office at 505-425-7278.
UTE LAKE: Bad weather this past week kept anglers off the lake. If it warms up just a bit, bundle up and give walleye and white bass fishing a try here. Use slab spoons and jigs tipped with minnows or Gulp worms. Work them slowly in 40-to-60 feet of water along the main channel.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: As of this past Monday, ice had formed at the back of coves and up the Chama River channel. Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing on the Bernalillo and Corrales Drains was fair for anglers using small crappie jigs, bunny leeches and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from the other drains.
ANIMAS RIVER: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: As of this past Monday the ice was reported as 8-to-12 inches thick. Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using corn and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species. For updated ice conditions, call the state park office at 505-876-2391.
CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 223cfs and56cfs below Abiquiu. We had no reports from anglers this week.
CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: Trout fishing was very good at all the ponds for anglers using olive and green streamers. Anglers also did well on the bait waters using power bait and small wooly buggers.
EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: As of Monday the lake was covered with 8-to-12 inches of ice. Trout fishing this past week was very good for anglers using salmon eggs. Limits of 10-to-14 inch fish were taken. A few fish were also caught by anglers using power bait and wax worms. The state park office at the lake has advised us to inform anglers that they will be fishing at their own risk. HERON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
JACKSON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 18cfs. Trout fishing on the lower Jemez was fair-to-good for anglers using small bead head nymphs, power bait and salmon eggs. Our best reports again this week came from anglers fishing downstream from Soda Dam.
LAKE FARMINGTON: We had no reports from anglers this week.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
NAVAJO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 449cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using chamois leeches, egg patterns, sparkle worms, San Juan worms, bunny leeches, mercury pheasant tails, zonkers and red annelids. Further downstream, fishing was fair-to-good using night crawlers, bead head nymphs and power bait.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and power bait.
BILL EVANS LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, salmon egg/corn combinations, spinners and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.
BURN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was slow for all species and there were very few anglers on the lake again this past week. The water level continues to rise and all boat ramps are currently open.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week but the pond was recently stocked and fishing should be good. Try using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and prop flies for some good trout fishing action.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and corn.
GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 94cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and wooly buggers.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
RIO GRANDE: Fishing here and below Caballo this past week was slow for all species.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Winter trout stocking has been suspended on this lake due to a golden algae bloom. Most of the trout that were scheduled to be stocked here were placed in Carlsbad Municipal Lake.
BLACK RIVER: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was good for anglers using flies under a bubble, corn, salmon eggs and power bait.
BOTTOMLESS LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BRANTLEY: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. The water level is dropping and the west side boat ramp is closed. We had no reports from anglers this week.
CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, prop flies under a bubble, power bait and salmon eggs.
GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week.
JAL LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.
LAKE VAN: We had no reports from anglers this week.
PECOS: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was 28cfs. Fishing was fair using power bait and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was .97cfs. Trout fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: There were no anglers on the lake this past week.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
