New Mexico FISHING REPORT
June 16, 2007
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Santa Rosa Lake: On June 13, Dan Murphy of Albuquerque caught a 3.11 pound smallmouth bass. He was using a fire tiger #7 jointed shad rap.
Clayton Lake: On June 12 and 13, James Lobb and Darren Varbel of Clayton caught 5 catfish ranging in size from 22.5 inches to 30 inches. They were using night crawlers for bait.
San Antonio River: On June 15, Cory Aslin age 13 of White Rock caught and released a 20 inch brown trout. Cory was fishing in the La Cueva Picnic area and using a worm under a bobber.
Ute Lake: On June 15, Kit Preston of Amarillo, TX caught a 6.84 pound walleye. He was using a leech. On June 16, Donny Allison of Amarillo, TX caught a 7.31 pound largemouth bass. On June 17, Lance Bradley of Farwell, TX caught a 4.66 pound largemouth bass. He was using a white spinner bait.
San Juan River: On June 16, Darrell La Moure of New River, AZ caught a 30 inch rainbow trout. He was fishing the Quality Waters and using a turks fly.
Abiquiu Reservoir: On June 16, Martin Sawyer and his wife Wendy of Kirtland AFB caught 8 walleye between 2.5 and 4.5 pound and 6 smallmouth bass to 3 pounds while fishing the upper end of the lake. They used jerk baits for the walleye and spinner baits and crank baits for the bass. All fish were taken in 6-to-12 feet of water. On June 17, Teresa Dennis of Santa Fe caught a 24 inch 4.25 pound walleye. She was trolling a rainbow colored crank bait.
NORTHEAST AREA
CANJILON LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week.
CHARETTE LAKES: Fishing was very good using worms for perch. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using floating grasshoppers, salmon eggs and power bait for trout.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 7cfs. Fishing was good using stone fly nymphs, may fly nymphs and small spinners for brown and rainbow trout.
CLAYTON LAKE: Fishing was excellent for anglers using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using worms and night crawlers for catfish and trout. We had no reports on other species.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing for crappie, bluegill, white bass and perch was very good this past week for anglers using minnows and worms. Anglers also did well trolling a variety of crank baits. We had good reports from anglers fishing both sides of the lake. Fishing was fair-to-good for angler using top water lures, tubes and salt craws for smallmouth bass. A few walleye and northern pike were taken by anglers using minnows, spinner baits and crank baits. Fishing was fair using minnows, night crawlers and liver for catfish.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using deep diving crank baits, grubs and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. Most of the walleye were taken at depths of 20-to-30 feet. Fishing for bluegill was very good for anglers using small wet flies, poppers, worms and small jigs. Fishing for crappie was slow but a few taken by anglers using minnows and jigs. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair-to-good using top water lures, tubes, salt craws, baby brush hogs and jerk baits. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, grubs and spinners. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver, night crawlers and cut bait.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Trout fishing continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did well using spinners, prop flies under a bubble, power bait and Kastmasters. Fishing for kokanee was fair for anglers trolling spinners and double whammies tipped with corn or power bait. Fishing for perch was fair-to-good for anglers using worms.
HOPEWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was slow. A few fish were taken by anglers using flies under a bubble.
LAKE MALOYA/ LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was good this past week at both lakes. Anglers did well using Pistol Petes, power bait, salmon eggs and home made dough baits. In addition to its normal stocking of trout, Lake Maloya will receive 30 trophy rainbow trout this week.
MAXWELL LAKES: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs for fish up to 18 inches.
MCALLISTER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good again this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn, Pistol Petes and spinners.
PECOS RIVER: As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 189cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using copper john barrs, bead head prince nymphs, wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers and worms.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 117cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners, wooly buggers and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 818cfs. Trout fishing was slow but there were some smallmouth bass taken by anglers using bead head wooly buggers in the Embudo area. For good trout fishing in the area, try the Rio Pueblo or Rio Hondo. Small attractor patterns are working very well on both streams.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners and minnows for small northern pike. A few catfish were taken by anglers using worms and cut bait.
STORRIE LAKE: Fishing was good for anglers using worms, power bait and cheese for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using worms and chicken liver for small catfish.
STUBBLEFIELD: We had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Fishing was good using leeches, bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs and deep diving crank baits for walleye. Most of the fish taken were at depths of 23-to-35 feet. Fishing was very good using worms and minnows for bluegill. Fishing was fair-to-good using spinner baits, jerk baits, top water lures and tubes for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, night crawlers and dough baits for catfish. Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits, spinners and minnows for white bass. Fishing for crappie has slowed.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing for walleye was good for anglers using jointed shad raps, jerk baits, grubs and spinner/night crawler combinations. The best reports this week came from anglers fishing the upper end of the lake. Anglers fishing for walleye also reported catching a few brown trout and catfish. Fishing was fair-to-good using top water lures, crank baits and spinner baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using worms for perch.
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing for tiger musky from the bank was good again this past week. Several anglers fishing from the bank reported catching and releasing tiger musky. They were using silver, blue, chartreuse, clown and fire tiger jerk baits. Anglers fishing from boats also reported catching and releasing several tiger musky. Other baits that worked well included in line spinners and large bunny leeches. We had no reports on other species.
CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 340cfs and 476cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was good this for anglers using copper john barrs, wooly buggers, Panther Martins and night crawlers for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.
EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using night crawlers, power bait, spinners and spoons. The best reports came from anglers fishing near the dam. Anglers trolling for trout also reported catching a few kokanee.
FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using prop flies, salmon eggs, corn worms and power bait. A few trout were also taken by anglers using spinners.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee action really heated up this past week as several anglers reported catching limits. Most of the kokanee were taken at depths of 18-to-22 feet. Best baits were double whammies and kokanee killers tipped with corn. Anglers trolling for kokanee also picked up a few small lake trout. Bank fishing for trout was slow but there were a few taken by anglers using power bait and spinners.
JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 38cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was goof for anglers using salmon eggs and small spinners. Fishing on the Cebolla was good for anglers using salmon eggs, worms, green Pistol Petes and bead head wooly buggers. Fishing on the Guadalupe was good for anglers using pheasant tail nymphs for brown trout up to 17 inches.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
NAVAJO LAKE: Kokanee fishing was reported as fair-to-good by anglers fishing on the Pine arm. They were working Arnies, sockeye slammers and needlefish tipped with corn at 20-to-30 feet. Crappie fishing continued to slow down but anglers still reported catching a few. They were using white and green jigs. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms and small jigs. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using tubes, brush hogs and top water lures. Anglers fishing for bass also reported catching several northern pike. We had no reports on other species.
RAMAH LAKE: The water level is extremely low. Fishing is poor.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spoons, spinners, power bait and salmon eggs.
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,230cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using turks, red annelids, dead chickens, San Juan worms and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was fair-to-good using jerk baits, copper john barrs, wooly buggers, night crawlers, garlic cheese and power bait.
SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing in the catch and release pond was fair for anglers using dead chickens, small streamers, small copper john barrs and Griffith’s gnats. Fishing in the youth and middle ponds was slow-to-fair using worms, power bait and dough bait for catfish.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was good using worms and poppers for bluegill. Fishing was fair using worms and dough bait for catfish. A few bass were taken by anglers using small swim baits and crank baits.
BURN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was fair using bottom bouncer/minnow rigs, crank baits and spinner/night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing for white bass was fair-to-good for anglers using grubs, crank baits and spinners. Fishing for catfish was good using night crawlers, liver, cut bait and dough baits. We had no reports on other species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was good using crank baits, spinner/minnow and spinner/night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was good trolling crank baits and casting crank baits, jig and grub combinations and jig and minnow combinations for white bass. A few striped bass in the 10 pound class were taken by anglers using jointed shad raps and Rat-L-Traps. Fishing for black bass was fair for anglers using top water lures, tubes and jerk baits.
GLENWOOD POND: Fishing was good using power bait for trout.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 83cfs. Fishing on the forks was fair for anglers using flash back pheasant tail nymphs and small bead head wooly buggers for trout and a few smallmouth bass.
LAKE ROBERTS: Trout fishing was reported as fair this past week by anglers using power bait, corn, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species.
PERCHA DAM: We had no reports from anglers this week.
QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers fishing from boats and using olive and black bead head wooly buggers, green emergers and olive Pistol Petes. Fishing was fair-to-good using jerk baits, spinners and bunny leeches for tiger musky.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1,590cfs. Fishing was fair using white grubs and spinners for white bass. Anglers using grubs also caught a few walleye. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. On the river below Caballo Lake, fishing was fair using minnows, night crawlers and grubs for walleye and white bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair using night crawlers and cut bait for catfish.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn and spinners. Fishing was fair using corn for carp.
BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.
CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was slow.
JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver, stink bait and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
OASIS PARK LAKE: The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete about June 30 of this year. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 103cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, minnows, dough bait and night crawlers for small catfish.
RIO BONITO: We had no reports from anglers this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 7.3cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using green rock worms, worms and salmon eggs. A few trout were also taken on small spinners.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Bass fishing this past week was quite good. Dan Murphy of Albuquerque reported catching limits of keeper size largemouth bass last Thursday and Friday. He was using crank baits and soft plastics and reported catching an equal number of bass on both. A few good bass were also taken by anglers using jerk baits and buzz baits. Dan also reported catching a few walleye and crappie while fishing for bass. Other anglers reported catching crappie and walleye while using jig and minnow rigs and spinner/minnow rigs fished in 10-to-20 feet of water. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing continued to be quite good this past week as anglers did well fishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and walleye. Bass anglers did best using Rat-L-Traps, tubes and spinner baits off main lake and secondary points in 6-to-10 feet of water. Several of the largemouth bass were in the 3-to-4 pound range. The best walleye reports came from anglers trolling wally divers, tail dancers, Rat-L-Traps and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. Anglers reported catching large numbers of smaller fish with a few in the 20-to-22 inch size. Anglers fishing from the bank and using minnows and night crawlers reported catching a few walleye and white bass and lots of bluegill.
