"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

June 29, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

Cochiti Lake: On June 26, Trevor Wafer age 10 of Albuquerque caught a 4.5 pound walleye. He was using a model A Bomber.

Pecos River: On June 27, Tarin Perez age 2 (with Dad’s help) caught and released a 14 inch rainbow taken on a red zebra midge.

Heron Lake: On June 28, Christian Lopez age 6 of Albuquerque caught a 20 inch kokanee while trolling a kokanee killer tipped with corn at 22 feet.

Sumner Lake: On June 29, Mark Gainer of Hobbs caught a 22 inch largemouth bass. He was using a top water lure.

Ute Lake: On June 29, Jeremy Fleck of Belen caught a 4.5 pound smallmouth bass. He was using a tube. On June 30, Shannon Tunnell of Belen caught a 6 pound walleye. He was using a Road Runner tipped with a minnow.

Shuree Ponds: On July 1, Mary Griego of Albuquerque caught a 23.5 inch rainbow trout. She was using a wet fly.

NORTHEAST AREA

CANJILON LAKES: Trout fishing was -good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, flies under a bubble, power bait and spinners.

CHARETTE LAKES: Fishing was very good this past week as several anglers caught limits of trout ranging from 13-to-18 inches. Best baits were worms, power bait, live grasshoppers and Panther Martins. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 9.7cfs. Fishing was good using yellow sallies, copper john barrs, may fly nymphs and small yellow and red Panther Martins for brown and rainbow trout.

CLAYTON LAKE: Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair-to-good using worms and night crawlers for trout. We had no reports on other species.

COCHITI LAKE: Fishing continued to be very good for anglers fishing with worms and minnows. They caught great numbers of small white bass, several perch and bluegill, a few smallmouth bass and an occasional catfish, walleye and northern pike. Fishing was good trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass.

CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing was good for anglers using small poppers, worms, minnows and small jigs for bluegill. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using jerk baits, Ricos, senkos, tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using grubs, jigs tipped with minnows, crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. Anglers reported catching several walleye while fishing at night with night crawlers and minnows. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, grubs, and minnows. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver and cut bait.

COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, small wet flies and power bait.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: Trout fishing was reported as fair for anglers fishing from the bank and fair-to-good from boats. Anglers fishing from boats did best trolling wedding rings, Z Rays and Panther Martins tipped with corn for a mix of kokanee and rainbow trout. Best baits from the bank were peach and yellow power baits and power eggs. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.

HOPEWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, small spinners and Pistol Petes.

LAKE MALOYA/ LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was reported as good at both lakes again this past week. Anglers did well using black Pistol Petes, green and chartreuse power baits and home made dough baits.

MAXWELL LAKES: Trout fishing was slow.

MCALLISTER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, Pistol Petes and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was slow for most anglers this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers using worms, Pistol Petes and spinners.

PECOS RIVER: As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 92cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using copper john barrs, midges, tan stimulators, small spinners and night crawlers. Anglers did well here and again on the Mora this past week.

RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 83cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs, San Juan worms, wooly worms and spinners.

RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 476cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using wooly buggers, gummies, jerk baits worms and spinners. Fishing for northern pike was fair for anglers using spinners and large jerk baits.

SHUREE PONDS: Anglers reported excellent fishing on opening day. Limits of trout were taken by anglers using lightning bugs, may fly nymphs, prince nymphs, Kastmasters and small Daredevles.

SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair using cut bait, jigs and Rat-L-Traps for northern pike. Fishing was slow-to-fair using cut bait and worms for channel catfish and yellow bellies. We had no reports on other species.

STORRIE LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using white power bait and fishing during the early morning and late evening hours. Most of the trout were in the 12-to-14 inch range. Fishing was fair using spinners along the dam for small smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

STUBBLEFIELD: We had no reports from anglers this week.

UTE LAKE: Fishing was good using Road Runner/minnow combinations for walleye and white bass. Most of the walleye were taken at depths of 20 feet over 30-to-40 feet of water. A few walleye were also taken on deep running crank baits and jigs tipped with minnows. Fishing was fair-to-good using jig/minnow rigs, crank baits, flies, grubs and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing was good using Ricos and tubes for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, minnows and liver at night for catfish. Fishing was very good using small jigs, crank baits, top water lures and worms for bluegill. Fishing for crappie was slow.

NORTHWEST AREA

ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using white and chartreuse curly tail grubs, jointed shad raps, wally divers, and spinner/night crawler combinations. The fish were scattered but most were taken by anglers fishing the upper end of the lake. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using top water lures, tubes and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing for tiger musky was slow-to-fair for anglers using jerk baits, spinners and cut bait. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using liver, shrimp and hot dogs. Fishing for trout was slow.

CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 704cfs and 887cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was slow-to-fair using night crawlers, wooly buggers and spinners for trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, worms, night crawlers and spinners. The best reports came from anglers fishing near the dam.

FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was slow for most anglers. A few trout were taken on spinners, small spoons and Pistol Petes.

HERON LAKE: Fishing for kokanee was very good this past week as several anglers reported catching limits of fish. Best baits were kokanee killers, double whammies and Cripplures tipped with corn and trolled at depths of 20-to-24 feet. Anglers trolling for kokanee also reported catching a few trout. Fishing from the bank was slow.

JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 18cfs. Trout fishing on the Guadalupe, Rio Las Vacas, East Fork and San Antonio was good for anglers using salmon eggs, copper john barrs, pheasant tails, royal wulffs, small tan stimulators and worms.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: Trout fishing was good using power bait, Pistol Petes and small spoons.

MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for anglers trolling Arnies, kokanee killers and Z Rays tipped with corn at depths of 20-to-40 feet for kokanee. Anglers trolling for kokanee also picked up a few rainbow and brown trout. Fishing was good using tubes, top water and spinner baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers fishing for bass also reported catching several northern pike. Fishing was slow-to-fair using worms for perch and bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, power eggs, spinners and small spoons.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 737cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good for anglers using small parachute adams, red annelids, dead chickens, San Juan worms and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was fair- using jerk baits, copper john barrs, wooly buggers, night crawlers, garlic cheese and power bait. The best reports from anglers came from those fishing early and late in the day.

SEVEN SPRINGS BROOD POND: The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12. Fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing was generally slow at all ponds this past week. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

SOUTHWEST AREA

BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was fair using poppers and worms for bluegill. Fishing was slow-to- fair using worms and dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good using worms for catfish.

CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was reported as slow-to-fair for anglers fishing for catfish and white bass. The best reports for catfish came from anglers using liver, shrimp and cut bait. Anglers fishing for white bass did best using grubs, crank baits and minnows. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing slowed a bit this past week for anglers fishing for walleye. There were still a few limits taken but the fish were a bit scattered. Best baits were crank baits, grubs and jig/minnow combinations. The best areas were near the Black Bluffs and Long Point. Fishing was fair using crank baits and jigs for white bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair using top water lures, tubes, senkos and spinner baits for black bass. Fishing for striped bass was slow but there were a few taken by anglers using live bait and large crank baits. Fishing for catfish was best for anglers fishing at night and using night crawlers and shrimp. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this week. If you’re in the area, check this pond out. It is stocked on a regular basis with keeper size rainbow trout.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, worms, hot dogs and dough baits for catfish.

GILA RIVER: Water flow near Gila on Monday was 68cfs. Fishing on the forks was slow but a few trout were taken by anglers using small pheasant tail nymphs and worms.

LAKE ROBERTS: We had no reports from anglers this week.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was fair using grubs, crank baits and minnows for white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using bead head wooly buggers, worms, power bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. Fishing was slow-to-fair using jerk baits and spinners for tiger musky.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 2,400cfs. Fishing on this stretch of water was slow. Fishing below Caballo was slow-to-fair using liver, cut bait and night crawlers for catfish.

SOUTHEAST AREA

BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn and spinners. Fishing was fair-to-good using corn for carp.

BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair-to-good using worms, night crawlers, stink bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week.

JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN: Fishing was fair using night crawlers, worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

OASIS PARK LAKE: The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 101cfs but the flow is expected to be increased this week and the area will be closed during the high flows.

RIO BONITO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 4.4cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms, small wet flies and salmon eggs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was good using grubs and jigs tipped with minnows for walleye. A few were also taken on crank baits and spinner/night crawler combinations. Fishing was fair using top water lures, jigs, deep running crank baits and spinner baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. If you had a rough time catching bass this past week it could be attributed to the fact that water is being released from the lake and expected to continue for about another week. During a release, back off the bank and fish a little deeper. Fishing for crappie was slow but a few good size fish were taken on crank baits and jig/minnow combinations. We had no reports on other species. A water release has begun and will continue through this week. Expect the lake level to drop about seven feet leaving plenty of water for boat access and fishing.

SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was very good this past week for anglers fishing for largemouth bass. Anglers did well using top water lures, tubes, senkos and spinner baits. Several of the bass caught were in the 18-to-23 inch range. Fishing for walleye had slowed some but there were several caught by anglers fishing at night and using night crawlers and minnows. During the day, best baits were spinner/night crawler and spinner/minnow rigs with a few also taken on crank baits. A few white bass were taken by anglers fishing for walleye. We had no reports on other species.
