"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

July 21, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

Shuree Ponds: Ira Everett, Jr. age 10 of Tesuque Pueblo caught a 16 inch rainbow trout. It’s not that it’s a big fish, but he caught it using his nephew’s Batman combo.

Ute Lake: On July 21, Franco Vallejos of Albuquerque caught and released a 4 pound largemouth bass. He was fishing deep and using a shaky head worm at the time.  

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            Trout fishing was fair for anglers using worms, spinners, Pistol Petes under a bubble, salmon eggs and power bait.

CHARETTE LAKES:           Trout fishing was very good for anglers fishing at night and using corn and power bait. Daytime fishing was slow.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 28cfs. Fishing was good using spinners, yellow sallies, elk hair caddis, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

CLAYTON LAKE:               Anglers fishing at night and using floating lights did very well fishing for catfish and trout. They were using night crawlers and power bait. Anglers trolling during the day and using spinner/worm combinations picked up a few small walleye.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Anglers fishing deep with jig and minnow combinations and jig and Gulp minnow combinations did very well. They caught a variety of fish including smallmouth bass, walleye, white bass, crappie and perch. Most of the fish caught were taken at depths of 35-to-37 feet over 55 feet of water. A few white bass were also taken by anglers deep trolling crank baits. A few catfish were taken by anglers fishing at night and using minnows. 

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing slowed considerably this past week. Anglers did best fishing from the late evening hours through mid morning. Best baits for walleye were jig and minnow and reef runners fished deep. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using brush hogs, spinner baits, senkos and small worms. A few white bass were taken on minnows and assorted crank baits. We had no reports on other species.  

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was fair this past week for anglers using small spinners, copper john barrs, salmon eggs and ant patterns.  

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Fishing for kokanee was good again this past week for anglers trolling kokanee killers, double whammies and Z Rays tipped with corn. Most of the fish caught were taken in 20-to-34 feet of water. Fishing from the bank was good for anglers using worms for perch. Anglers using flies and Pistol Petes under a bubble and working the coves from the bank caught several rainbow trout.

HOPEWELL LAKE:             Trout fishing was fair for anglers using parachute adams and copper john barrs.  

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing continued to be very good at both lakes this past week. Anglers using flies caught several trout while using ant and mosquito patterns. Other good baits were Pistol Petes, homemade dough baits and salmon eggs.  

MAXWELL LAKES:           Trout fishing was slow.

MCALLISTER LAKE:         There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, worms and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners.

PECOS RIVER:                      As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 74cfs. Trout fishing here and on the Mora was good for anglers using stimulators, elk hair caddis, bead head hares ears, small spinners and night crawlers.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 83cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using bead head prince nymphs, stimulators, copper john barrs, wooly worms, spinners and night crawlers.   

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 515cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using wooly buggers, gummies, black ants, night crawlers and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

SHUREE PONDS:                 Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using hoppers, prince nymphs, wooly worms, stimulators, spoons and spinners.    

SPRINGER LAKE:                Fishing was slow-to-fair using cut bait, liver and night crawlers for catfish. A few small northern pike were taken by anglers using small inline spinners. We had no reports on other species.

STORRIE LAKE:                  Fishing was slow for all species.

STUBBLEFIELD:                  Fishing was generally slow for all species. A few catfish were taken by anglers fishing at night and using liver.  

UTE LAKE:                           Bass fishing was good for a few anglers but slow for most this past week. The best reports we received were from anglers fishing deep trees and deep off points. They were using shaky head jigs and catching smallmouth and largemouth bass. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were taken by anglers fishing at night under floating lights. They were using cut bait and liver. A few white bass and walleye were taken by anglers trolling bottom bouncer/minnow rigs and deep crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Walleye fishing was good again this past week for anglers using curly tail grubs in the brush in 10-to-15 feet of water. Anglers also picked up a few walleye trolling and drifting spinner/night crawler combinations, jig and Gulp combinations and crank baits. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using tubes, salt craws and senkos. A few bass were also taken on top water lures. Fishing for all other species was slow.   

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing was good using jerk baits, Zara Spooks, husky jerks, spinner baits and bunny leeches for tiger musky. Anglers fishing for musky reported the action as best this past Saturday. The tiger musky ranged in size from 28-to-40 inches. Fishing for all other species was slow.

CHAMA RIVER:                  Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 380cfs and 554cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing below El Vado was good using salmon eggs, power bait and night crawlers for stocked rainbows. A few brown trout were taken by anglers using gold ribbed hares ears, wooly buggers and night crawlers. The water was off color. Fishing below Abiquiu was reported as slow.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow.

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing was slow.

HERON LAKE:                     Fishing for kokanee was good for anglers using wedding rings, kokanee killers and double whammies tipped with corn. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 20-to-30 feet. Fishing for lake trout was slow. A few rainbows were taken by anglers fishing early and late in the day and using power bait.  

JEMEZ WATERS:               As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 34cfs. When the water was clear, trout fishing on the Jemez, East Fork and San Antonio was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, zebra midges, royal wulffs, parachute adams, copper john barrs, hoppers and small tan and yellow stimulators. Fishing on the Cebolla below the dam at Fenton was slow. The water turned from stained to murky during the heavy rains.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

MANZANO LAKE:             Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using super dupers during the day and parachute adams in the early morning hours. A few trout were also taken by anglers using Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Fishing this past week was fair using tubes, senkos, spinner baits, crank baits and brush hogs for smallmouth bass. Anglers fishing for bass and using crank baits and spinner baits reported catching several northern pike. Fishing for kokanee slowed some. A few fish were taken by anglers trolling double whammies tipped with corn at 30-to-45 feet on the main lake.  Bank fishing continued to be good for anglers fishing for trout and using salmon eggs, power bait and night crawlers. A few crappie were taken by anglers using small grubs and jigs. We had no reports on other species. .

RAMAH LAKE:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait.  

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 787cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was very good using egg patterns, small parachute adams small jigs, leech patterns, dead chickens, San Juan worms and small bead head pheasant tail nymphs. Through the bait waters, fishing was good using salmon eggs, leech patterns, egg patterns, worms, cheese and power bait.

 SEVEN SPRINGS

    BROOD POND:                The pond is open to fishing for children under age 12.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing was generally slow at all ponds this past week. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

BURN LAKE:                        We had no reports from anglers this week.  

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was slow-to-fair using crank baits and grubs for white bass and walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver, night crawlers and cut bait. Most of the fish were taken by anglers fishing at night. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using crank baits, grubs, night crawlers and jig and minnow combinations for walleye. A few white bass were taken by anglers using crank baits, sassy shad, jigs and top water lures. Fishing was fair using senkos, tubes, spinner baits, jerk baits and crank baits for black bass.  Fishing was slow but a few striped bass were taken by anglers using top water lures, jigs and live bait. Fishing was fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait at night for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow.

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 139cfs.  We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 Fishing was slow for all species.    

PERCHA DAM:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

QUEMADO LAKE:             Trout fishing was fair for anglers using flies under a bubble and power bait. A few tiger musky were caught by anglers using spinners and jerk baits.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1,790cfs.  Fishing was generally slow but we did hear of a few catfish taken by anglers using liver and shrimp.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, Pistol Petes under a bubble and spinners. The best reports came from anglers fishing early and late in the day.  

BOSQUE REDONDO:          We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  We had no reports from anglers this week.

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE

                RESERVOIR:         We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.  

JAL LAKE:                            We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN:                          We had no reports from anglers this week.  

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 93cfs. Fishing was good using liver, shrimp, night crawlers and cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.  

RIO BONITO:                       We had no reports from anglers this week.  

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 2.5cfs.  Fishing was fair using small spinners for trout.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was slow-to-fair using senkos, tubes, salt craws, brush hogs and crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. A few big crappie were taken by anglers using small jigs, crank baits and tubes. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was slow-to-fair using crank baits, senkos and tubes for largemouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow for most but a few anglers did well using grubs, crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. We had no reports on other species.
