"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

August 25, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Bluewater Lake: On August 24, Steve Sweeten of Albuquerque caught a 28 inch tiger musky. On the same day his son Brian Sweeten caught a 28.25 inch tiger musky. They were using super dupers and Daredevles.

 

Clayton Lake: On August 25, Gene Ziegelgruber of Amarillo, TX caught and released an 8 pound 1 ounce largemouth bass. The fish was 22.75 inches long with a girth of 18 inches. He was using a white spinner bait.

 

Ute Lake: On August 21, Bill Brantley of Canyon, TX caught a 3.19 pound smallmouth bass. On August 23, Pete May of Logan caught a 5 pound largemouth bass. He was using a top water lure.

 

Navajo Lake: On August 17, Julian Gurule caught a 28.5 inch 10 pound carp. He was using worms.

 

Abiquiu Lake: On August 27, Stan Kosiewicz and his wife Amy caught and released several walleye including a 24 inch, a 26 inch and a 30 inch fish. The big one weighed 10 pounds. They were trolling crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs.

 

Tingley Beach: Abel Lovato of Albuquerque caught a 24 inch channel catfish at the Central Pond. He was using dry cat food and chicken liver.

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES:           Trout fishing was quite good this past week for anglers fishing from the bank and from boats. From the bank, best baits were power bait, corn, grasshoppers, Pistol Petes and double hackle peacock nymphs for trout up to 16 inches. From boats anglers did well trolling cow bell/worm combinations. Fishing was fair using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 53cfs. Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using stimulators, tricos and copper john barrs. A few fish were also taken by anglers using spinners.  

CLAYTON LAKE:               There were a few good size walleye taken by anglers fishing from the bank. They were using tubes and jigging them off the bottom. A few largemouth bass were caught by anglers using spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.  

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was good again this past week. Anglers did well using top water lures, senkos, tubes and jerk baits. Fishing was slow for other species but there were a few white bass and walleye caught by anglers trolling crank baits. Fishing for bluegill was slow-to-fair using worms.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using worms, damsel flies and royal coachmen. A few were also taken on mosquito pattern flies.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Fishing was fair trolling christmas tree/worm combinations for perch and kokanee. Several kokanee were also taken by anglers using spoons tipped with corn. Most of the kokanee were taken at depths of 14-to-25 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow.   

HOPEWLL LAKE:               Trout fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, worms, mosquito patterns, black gnats and parachute adams. 

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Fishing on Lake Maloya was good for anglers using assorted baits under bobbers and keeping them off the bottom. A few fish were also taken on Pistol Petes and spinners. Fishing on the stream below the dam was good for anglers using small dry flies. We had no reports from Lake Alice.  

MAXWELL LAKES:           Fishing was slow.

MCALLISTER LAKE:         There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was good for anglers using spinners, Pistol Petes, worms, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers fishing from float tubes and boats and using Pistol Petes. The lake is getting mossy and a little tough to fish from the bank.

PECOS RIVER:                      As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 76cfs. Trout fishing here and on the Mora and Cow Creek was good for anglers using  parachute adams, copper john barrs, power bait, small spinners and night crawlers.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 69cfs. Trout fishing picked up a bit this past week as waters cleared. Best baits were worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs, small bead head wooly buggers and spinners.

RIO COSTILLA:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 440cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using wooly buggers for trout and a few smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

RIO PUEBLO:                       Trout fishing was fair-to-good using small parachute adams and royal coachmen.   

SHUREE PONDS:                 Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spoons and bead head wooly buggers.   These are special trout waters and only artificial flies or lures with single, barbless hooks may be used.    

SPRINGER LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.

STORRIE LAKE:                  Trout fishing in the early morning and late evening hours was fair-to-good for anglers using yellow and white power bait. The best reports came from anglers fishing within 20 feet of the shore. We had no reports on other species.  

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing picked up a bit this past week for anglers fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Anglers did well using top water lures, senkos, jerk baits, jigs and smallie beavers. There were a few catfish taken by anglers fishing at night and using liver and night crawlers. Fishing was slow for all other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for some […others like Mike Alvarado of Santa Fe boated 21 fish in 5 hours on Saturday afternoon fishing 200 Reef Runner Ripshads in Red Oahe and Mack’s Lure Wally Pops] over the past weekend but picked up Monday for anglers trolling crank baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs for walleye. They caught several fish while working the upper end of the lake. There were a few smallmouth bass taken by anglers using tubes and senkos.  

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing for tiger musky was quite sporadic this past week. Some anglers reported several hookups while others never even had a follow. Best lures this past week were super dupers, Daredevles and jerk baits. We had no reports on other species.

CHAMA RIVER:                  Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 423cfs and 460cfs

below Abiquiu. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair for anglers using bead head wooly buggers, copper john barrs, spinners and night crawlers. Fishing above the lake was fair using the same baits. We had no reports from anglers below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was rated as slow for most species with only a few walleye, white bass and smallmouth bass caught this past week. Best baits were minnows for the walleye and white bass and minnows and top water lures for the smallmouth bass.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing pressure was very light and trout fishing was rated as slow.

FENTON LAKE:                   The majority of anglers fishing here this past week reported fishing as slow but there were a few trout taken by anglers fishing in the early morning hours and using power bait.

HERON LAKE:                     Fishing for kokanee was good trolling double whammies, sockeye slammers and white Z Rays. Most of the fish caught were in the 10-to-17 inch size range and were taken at depths of 20-to-35 feet. Anglers trolling shallower were reporting catching several rainbow trout. Fishing from the bank was slow.

JEMEZ WATERS:               As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 16cfs. Trout fishing here and on the Rio Guadalupe was fair for anglers using parachute adams, royal wulffs, stimulators, salmon eggs and worms.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: We had no reports from anglers this week.

MANZANO LAKE:             Trout fishing was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Fishing was good for anglers trolling double whammies, Arnies and kokanee killers tipped with corn or worms for kokanee. Anglers who did best reported catching the bigger kokanee at depths of 85-to-92 feet and smaller fish at 40-to-55 feet. They were working the main lake between Francis Canyon and the dam. Fishing was fair using top water lures, jerk baits, senkos and tubes for smallmouth bass. Most of the smallmouth bass were short fish. A few northern pike were taken by anglers using spinner baits and buzz baits. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, hoppers and wooly buggers for rainbow trout.    

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        We had no reports from anglers this week.   

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 942cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters this past week was fair for anglers using San Juan worms, sparkle worms, dead chickens, parachute adams, small bead head pheasant tail nymphs and egg patterns.  Fishing through the bait waters was fair for anglers using jerk baits, wooly buggers, spinners and night crawlers for a mix of rainbow and brown trout.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing for small largemouth bass was good in the Children’s and Central ponds for anglers using spinners. Fishing for catfish was good in the Central Pond for anglers using hot dogs, stink bait, dry cat food and chicken liver. Fishing for trout was slow but there are a few big bass in the Catch and Release pond to challenge your fishing skills.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

BURN LAKE:                        Fishing was slow for all species.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was fair using crank baits, jig and grub combinations and minnows  for white bass. A few white bass were also taken on top water lures. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was a bit tough for angers looking for keeper size largemouth and smallmouth bass. Smaller fish were active and were being caught by anglers using spider grubs, tubes, senkos and Gulp worms. Most of the bass caught were taken off rocky points and rock bluffs. Fishing was good for anglers who found white bass busting shad in McRae Canyon and Rock Canyon over the weekend. They caught several good size fish while using top water lures, crank baits and grubs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait over baited holes for catfish. Fishing was good using worms and small plastics for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow.

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 107cfs.  Fishing on the Forks was fair for anglers using stimulators, parachute adams and worms for trout.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.    

PERCHA DAM:                   Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.  

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, jerk baits and spoons for tiger musky. Trout fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1,480cfs.  Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using night crawlers, liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing below Caballo Lake was slow with very light pressure. We had no reports on other species.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species. 

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair-to-good in the early morning hours for anglers using spinners, flies under a bubble, salmon eggs, power bait, and worms.

BOSQUE REDONDO:          We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  This would be a good lake for anglers to practice different casting and tackle techniques.

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       Fishing was slow for all species.

GRINDSTONE

                RESERVOIR:         We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.  

JAL LAKE:                            Fishing was slow for all species.

LAKE VAN:                          Fishing was slow for all species.   

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 122cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, cut bait and night crawlers for flat head and channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 2.1cfs.  We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was slow. There were a few largemouth bass taken by anglers using tubes, top water lures and crank baits. We had no reports on other species.  

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was slow for all species.
