"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Tingley Beach: On August 29, Abel Lovato of Albuquerque caught a 27 inch 8 pound catfish. He was fishing the Central Pond and using a cat food chicken liver combination on a single large hook.

 

Ute Lake: On August 30, Calvin Liles of Logan caught a 4.2 pound largemouth bass. He was using a buzz bait.

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, power bait, spoons and Pistol Petes.

CHARETTE LAKES:           Trout fishing was good again this past week for anglers fishing from the bank and from boats. From the bank, best baits were power bait, corn, Pistol Petes and double hackle peacock nymphs. From boats anglers did well trolling spinner/worm combinations and power bait. Fishing was fair using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Water flow below Eagle Nest this past Monday was 30cfs. Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using spinners, worms, stimulators, tricos and copper john barrs.   

CLAYTON LAKE:               Fishing was slow with very light pressure this past week. A few trout and small walleye were taken by anglers using worms and jig and worm combinations.   

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using senkos rigged whacky style, tubes, salt craws, Ricos and buzz baits. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers trolling white, chartreuse and fire tiger crank baits. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers fishing at night and using liver, cut bait and night crawlers. A few walleye were taken by anglers using bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs, jig and minnow combinations and crank baits.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was fair this past week for anglers using worms, corn, salmon eggs and spinners.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Fishing was fair trolling spinner/worm and spinner/corn combinations for trout, kokanee and perch. Most of the fish caught were taken at depths of 8-to-20 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms for perch and spinners for trout.   

HOPEWLL LAKE:               Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, copper john barrs, black gnats and parachute adams. 

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was a bit sporadic this past week. Some anglers did well using marshmallows, dry flies, Pistol Petes and power bait. They did best fishing from the bank in the morning and evening hours. Fishing at Lake Alice was slow with very light pressure.

LOS PINOS:                          Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs, worms, spinners, stimulators and copper john barrs.  

MAXWELL LAKES:           Fishing was slow.

MCALLISTER LAKE:         There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, worms, spinners, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:                 Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms, power bait and Pistol Petes. The best reports came from anglers fishing from float tubes and boats and fishing during the morning hours.

PECOS RIVER:                      As of Monday, water flow near Pecos was 76cfs. Trout fishing was very good here and on the Mora for anglers using elk hair caddis, small hoppers, copper john barrs, salmon eggs, small spinners and night crawlers.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 72cfs. Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using night crawlers, worms, salmon eggs, stimulators, copper john barrs, small bead head wooly buggers and spinners.

RIO COSTILLA:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 501cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using spinners, night crawlers and San Juan worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

RIO PUEBLO:                       We had no reports from anglers this week.

SHUREE PONDS:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using spoons, hoppers and bead head wooly buggers.   These are special trout waters and only artificial flies or lures with single, barbless hooks may be used.    

SPRINGER LAKE:                Fishing was slow for all species.

STORRIE LAKE:                  Trout fishing was fair in the early morning and late evening hours. Anglers did best using marshmallows, yellow and white power bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.  

UTE LAKE:                           White bass and walleye fishing picked up this past week. Anglers did well trolling Reef Runners and Wally Divers at 20-to-24 feet over 30-to-40 feet of water. They were working along the edges of the main river channel and keying on changes in the contour. Fishing for crappie was fair for anglers fishing at night and using small jigs and minnows. Fishing was fair using drop shot rigs, tubes, senkos, buzz baits and jerk baits for black bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers fishing at night and using liver and cut bait.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Fishing was fair for anglers trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs and crank baits at the upper end of the lake for walleye. A few walleye were also taken by anglers working jig and grub combinations around brush in 10-to-20 feet of water. Fishing was fair using tubes and drop shot rigs for smallmouth bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver. We had no reports on other species.  

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing for tiger musky was fair for some and slow for others this past week. Best baits were spinners, small swim baits and jerk baits. A few trout were taken by anglers using small spinners and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

CHAMA RIVER:                  Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 593cfs and 350cfs

below Abiquiu. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair for anglers using night crawlers, wooly buggers, copper john barrs, power bait and spinners. Fishing above the lake was fair using the same baits. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners and worms.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was rated as slow-to-fair for anglers using minnows and jig and minnow combinations for white bass and a few smallmouth bass. A few bass were also taken on top water lures and crank baits. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were caught by anglers using dough baits and cut bait. A few bluegill and crappie were taken by anglers using worms and minnows. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing pressure was very light and trout fishing was rated as slow. A few fish were taken by anglers using power bait and night crawlers.

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing was good for anglers fishing the early morning hours and using worms and green and yellow power baits.

HERON LAKE:                     Fishing for kokanee was good trolling double whammies, kokanee killers, sockeye slammers and Z Rays. Most of the kokanee were taken at depths of 18-to-35 feet. Fishing was fair trolling Panther Martins and double whammies at 10-to-20 feet for rainbow trout and a few smaller kokanee. Fishing from the bank was slow but a few trout were taken by anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.

JEMEZ WATERS:               As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 36cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using small spinners, royal wulffs, hoppers, copper john barrs, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Rio Guadalupe and the East Fork was fair for anglers using worms, copper john barrs and small parachute adams.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners and Pistol Petes.  

MANZANO LAKE:             Trout fishing was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using Ricos, tubes, small senkos, Robo worms and baby brush hogs for smallmouth bass and a few largemouth bass. Most of the fish caught were small. They were taken at depths of 4-to-20 feet. Fishing for kokanee was slow-to-fair using double whammies, kokanee killers, Arnies and Cripplures tipped with corn and trolled at depths of 45-to-85 feet. Anglers having the best success were trolling off downriggers. Night fishing was fair for anglers using liver and stink bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. Fishing was slow-to-fair using jerk baits and top water lures for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Fishing was slow.    

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using small spoons, power bait and salmon eggs for trout.    

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 942cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters this past week was considered fair at best for anglers using small jigs, grey RS2s, grey midges, dead chickens, parachute adams, small bead head pheasant tail nymphs and egg patterns.  Fishing through the bait waters was slow-to-fair for anglers using jerk baits, wooly buggers, spinners and night crawlers for a mix of rainbow and brown trout. Some of the bait waters were quite muddy from heavy rains over the past weekend.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing for catfish was good at the Central Pond for anglers using hot dogs, stink bait, chicken liver and dry cat food. Fishing for small largemouth bass was good in the Children’s and Central ponds for anglers using spinners. Fishing for trout in the Catch and Release pond was slow.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

BURN LAKE:                        Fishing was fair using hot dogs, worms, liver and dough baits for catfish.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers trolling white, chartreuse and fire tiger crank baits for white bass. A few white bass were also taken by anglers using top water lures and jig and grub combinations. Fishing was fair using crank baits, grubs and jig and minnow combinations for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair for anglers using tubes, senkos, worms and spider grubs. As was the case last week, most of the bass caught were taken off rocky points and rock bluffs. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using top water lures, crank baits and grubs for white bass. The key was being in the right place at the right time. Anglers did well near Kettle Top, in McRae Canyon and near Rock Canyon. Fishing was fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait for catfish. Fishing for striped bass was slow.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow but a few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and hot dogs.

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 294cfs. Trout fishing on the Forks was slow-to-fair for anglers using small bead head wooly buggers, copper john barrs and worms.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.    

PERCHA DAM:                   We had no reports from anglers this week. 

 

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, jerk baits and spoons for tiger musky. Trout fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday was 1,080cfs.  Fishing was fair for anglers using night crawlers, liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing below Caballo Lake was slow with very light pressure. We had no reports on other species.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species.   

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair in the early morning hours and evening hours for anglers using spinners, salmon eggs, power bait, and worms.

BOSQUE REDONDO:          Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  This would be a good lake for anglers to practice different casting and tackle techniques.

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       Fishing was slow but a few small bass were taken by anglers using grubs and worms.

GRINDSTONE

                RESERVOIR:         We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.  

JAL LAKE:                            We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN:                          We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 1,440cfs. Access to the fishing area below Sumner Lake has been closed and will remain closed during the high water release.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso as of Monday was 3.7cfs.  Trout fishing was fair for anglers using small bead head nymphs and salmon eggs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        A water release has begun and is expected to continue for the next 14 days. During this time as the lake level is dropping back off the banks and fish a little deeper off rocky points and bluffs. Use tubes, night crawlers, jig and minnow and jig and worm combinations for your best chance at walleye, bass and crappie. Keep a top water lure handy and watch for sporadic surface activity throughout the day.  

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver, cut bait and worms for small catfish. Fishing was slow for all other species. Fishing pressure was very light.
