"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

September 22, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Abiquiu Lake: On September 23, Abi Lechel age 3 of Los Alamos and Alexi Stangel age 3 of Albuquerque helped their dads and Dan Duren reel in a 22 inch walleye caught on a Reef Runner 200 Ripshad and a 23 inch walleye caught on a crawler harness.

 

Monte Verdi Lake: On September 6, Preston Rel of Albuquerque caught a 22 inch, 4.5 pound rainbow trout. It was his first outing with a fly rod and he was using a green nymph.

 

Ute Lake: On September 23 during a tournament, the team of Marshall and Furrow of Clovis weighed in a 4.1 pound largemouth bass. They were using top water baits.

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            Trout fishing was fair for anglers using Pistol Petes under a bubble, power bait and worms.  

CHARETTE LAKES:           Trout fishing was good for anglers using spinner/worm combinations, power bait and salmon eggs. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Water flow Monday morning below Eagle Nest was 13cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using yellow humpys, hares ears, worms and salmon eggs.   

CLAYTON LAKE:               Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.      

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using buzz baits and spinner baits. Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinners and slab spoons for white bass. We received good reports from anglers fishing near Big Island and on the south side of the lake. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair-to-good using cut bait, liver and night crawlers for catfish.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Fishing was fair for anglers trolling kokanee killers, Panther Martins and Z Rays tipped with corn for kokanee and rainbow trout. Bank fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, power bait and worms for trout and perch. The kokanee snagging season opens here October 1st.

HOPEWELL LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.  

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was good for anglers using power bait and Panther Martins. The best reports came from anglers fishing near the boat ramp. Fishing at Lake Alice was slow.

LOS PINOS:                          Trout fishing was good again this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, worms, spinners and copper john barrs.  

MAXWELL LAKES:           We had no reports from anglers this week.     

MCALLISTER LAKE:         There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was fair for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:                 Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, spinners and Pistol Petes.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 47cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using small spinners, bead head pheasant tail nymphs, elk hair caddis, salmon eggs and worms for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 82cfs. Trout fishing was rated as slow-to-fair again this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers using night crawlers, copper john barrs and wooly buggers.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 464cfs. Fishing was slow.

RIO PUEBLO:                       We had no reports from anglers this week.  

SHUREE PONDS:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, spoons and wooly buggers. Fishing pressure was very light.

SPRINGER LAKE:                Fishing was slow for all species.

STORRIE LAKE:                  Trout fishing was rated as fair this past week. The best bait was salmon eggs but a few trout were also taken on power bait.

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing this past week was rated fair-to-good for anglers using buzz baits, chug bugs, Ricos and Zara Spooks for largemouth and smallmouth bass. A few bass were also taken by anglers using senkos, tubes and spinner baits. Fishing improved a bit but was still rated as slow for walleye. The fish caught were taken by anglers trolling crank baits at 25-to-35 feet. Fishing for white bass was sporadic. A few were taken on top water lures, jigging spoons and crank baits. Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, cut bait and dough baits for catfish.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Fishing picked up considerably this past week. Anglers reported catching several walleye in the 14-to-23 inch range and some good size smallmouth bass. The walleye were taken by anglers trolling crank baits and crawler harnesses and pitching tubes and grubs. The larger fish appeared to be stacked along break lines at 25-to-40 feet. The smallmouth bass were taken on tubes and jerk baits worked at depths of 3-to-20 feet. Anglers reported good success near the dam as well as at the upper end of the lake.   

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using swim baits for tiger musky. On windy days, the musky were found in the cove next to the boat ramp and most were cruising in 2-to-4 feet of water. Fishing for all other species was slow.  

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 62cfs and 97cfs respectively. In spite of the low water conditions fishing at both locations was fair for anglers using power bait, worms, copper john barrs and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.   

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, jigs, slab spoons and crank baits for white bass. Anglers fishing for white bass also picked up a few crappie and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using top water lures and jigs for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Most of the black bass were taken in less than 10 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE:           Trout fishing was fair for anglers using night crawlers, salmon eggs and spinners. Fishing pressure was light.  

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and power bait.

HERON LAKE:                     Fishing for kokanee was fair for anglers trolling Cripplures, Panther Martins and double whammies tipped with corn at 20-to-35 feet. The fish ranged in size from 10-to-16 inches. Fishing from the bank was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait for trout. Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Trout fishing on the Jemez, East Fork, Cebolla and the Rio Las Vacas was good this past week for anglers using elk hair caddis, copper john barrs, small spinners, salmon eggs and worms.

LAGUNA DEL CAMPO: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using spinners and power bait.  

MANZANO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Smallmouth bass fishing continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did well using small senkos, worms tubes and grubs on drop shot rigs. They were working points and bluffs in 12-to-30 feet of water. A few bass were also taken by anglers working top water lures. Fishing was fair using spinners, crank baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing for kokanee was rated as fair by anglers trolling double whammies, kokanee killers and Arnies tipped with corn at depths of 60-to-80 feet. Most of the kokanee were taken by anglers fishing the main lake between Sims Mesa and the dam. Bank fishing near the dam was fair using salmon eggs and power bait for trout. The kokanee snagging season here opens October 1st. 

RAMAH LAKE:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Fishing was slow.    

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, super dupers, Panther Martins and Z Rays.

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,000cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters this past weekend was very good for anglers using small parachute adams and Griffith’s gnats during the midge hatches. Some good fish were also taken by anglers using streamers on the upper flats. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using jerk baits, wooly buggers, spoons, spinners and night crawlers.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing was fair-to-good using liver, dough bait and dry cat food for catfish at the Central Pond. Anglers fishing here also did well using spinners, small senkos and worms for small largemouth bass. Fishing for trout was slow.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:            Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using tubes and small swim baits for largemouth bass. A few bluegill were taken by anglers using wooly buggers and worms. We had no reports on other species.

BURN LAKE:                        We had no reports from anglers this week.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was fair using crank baits, slab spoons and grubs for white bass. A few walleye were taken by anglers using crank baits along the east side of the lake. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good for anglers using liver and shrimp over baited holes. Fishing was fair using top water lures, spinner baits, senkos and tubes for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Most of the black bass were caught in less than 12 feet of water. Fishing was fair using live bait, grubs and slab spoons for white bass. Striped bass fishing was slow for some but fair-to-good for others. Anglers who found the stripers had their best luck using live bait, jigs and swim baits.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers but if you’re in the area check it out. The pond is stocked with rainbow trout on a regular basis.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.   

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 144cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.       

PERCHA DAM:                   Fishing was slow for all species.   

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was fair for anglers using jerk baits, in line spinners and spoons for tiger musky. Fishing for trout was slow-to-fair using power bait.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 976cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

SNOW LAKE:                      We had no reports from anglers this week. 

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species.  

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms and fishing mid day hours. A few trout were also taken by anglers using prince nymphs late in the day. 

BOSQUE REDONDO:          Fishing was slow for all species. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and worms.  

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  This would be a good lake for anglers to practice different casting and tackle techniques.

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE

                RESERVOIR:         We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms.  

JAL LAKE:                            Fishing was slow for all species.

LAKE VAN:                          Fishing was slow. A few catfish were taken by anglers using hot dogs, night crawlers and liver.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be complete around the end of summer. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 87cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using night crawlers, shrimp and minnows for channel catfish and a few flathead catfish. We had no reports on other species.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 5.9cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was slow-to-fair using top water lures and drop shot rigs for largemouth and smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was slow for all species.
