ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

October 6, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Ute Lake: On October 6, Ty Pruitt of Canyon, TX caught a 5.50 pound largemouth bass. He was using a spinner bait. On October 7, the team of Lind and Villa of Colorado weighed in a 4.01 smallmouth bass. They were fishing a team bass tournament.

 

Pecos River: On September 30, Adolph Candelario Jr. of Albuquerque caught a 20 inch rainbow trout with a 13 inch girth. He caught the fish below Jack’s Creek while using a Panther Martin Spinner.

 

Cochiti Lake: On October 4, Phil Macias of Albuquerque caught a 22 inch and a 20 inch channel catfish. He was fishing along the riprap and using live minnows on the bottom.

 

Santa Cruz: On October 8, Apollo Watkins age 10 and his brother Cosmo Watkins age 6 each caught their first limits of trout. They were using night crawlers and white power bait.

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES:           Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using Panther Martins, power bait, salmon eggs and christmas tree/worm combinations. Most of the fish were in the 9-to-14 inch range. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Water flow Monday morning below Eagle Nest was 12cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using copper john barrs, pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs.   

CLAYTON LAKE:               Fishing picked up this past week with the cooler weather. Anglers reported catching trout, bluegill and catfish. Best baits were worms, power bait and home made dough bait.       

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using crank baits, spinner baits, worms, tubes and top water lures. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits at 12-to-25 feet for walleye. A few white bass were taken by anglers using grubs, slab spoons and crank baits. Fishing was fair-to-good using liver and minnows for catfish.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Fishing was slow.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Fishing from the bank was good for anglers using worms for perch. Anglers using power bait reported catching a few kokanee and a few good size rainbows. Anglers trolling did well using Pistol Petes and Platte River specials at 5-to-15 feet for kokanee and rainbow trout. Kokanee snagging was slow.

HOPEWELL LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing was reported as good at both lakes again this past week. Anglers did well using salmon eggs, power bait and an assortment of flies.

LOS PINOS:                          Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners, worms and copper john barrs.  

MAXWELL LAKES:           We had no reports from anglers this week.     

MCALLISTER LAKE:         There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was fair for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, spinners and Pistol Petes. Fishing pressure was light.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 36cfs. Trout fishing was good for anglers using bead head pheasant tail nymphs, salmon eggs, spinners and worms for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 69cfs. Trout fishing was fair using night crawlers, copper john barrs and wooly buggers.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 428cfs. Trout fishing above the confluence with the Red River was fair for anglers using crane fly larva, copper john barrs, micro mays and bead head pheasant tail nymphs.

RIO PUEBLO:                       We had no reports from anglers this week.  

SPRINGER LAKE:                Fishing was slow for all species.

STORRIE LAKE:                  Trout fishing was fair this past week for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing for catfish was very good for anglers using liver, night crawlers, dough baits and leeches. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was good for anglers using buzz baits, spinner baits, crank baits, tubes and Gulp leeches. There were several bass over 4 pounds weighed in at a tournament this past weekend. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using crank baits, grubs and leeches in 14-to-20 feet of water for walleye.  

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Fishing was good trolling assorted crank baits and bottom bouncer/Gulp worm rigs at 18-to-25 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using tubes, grubs, leeches and crank baits in 5-to-15 feet of water. Anglers fishing for smallmouth bass also reported catching a few good size crappie. We had no reports on other species.    

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing was fair for anglers using swim baits and jerk baits for tiger musky. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver. Fishing for all other species was slow.  

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 147cfs and 239cfs respectively. The water was a bit murky below El Vado but anglers did well using night crawlers for brown trout up to 19 inches. They also caught several small rainbows while using power bait. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was fair using minnows on the bottom for catfish. A few small white bass were taken by anglers using slab spoons, crank baits and jig and minnow combinations. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE:           Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs and fishing near the dam. Fishing pressure was very light.   

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and power bait.

HERON LAKE:                     Trout fishing was slow-to-fair this past week for anglers trolling Panther Martins, Z Rays and Super Dupers.  Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10 and any kokanee caught while fishing for trout must be immediately released.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Trout fishing on the Jemez, East Fork and Rio Guadalupe was good this past week for anglers using crane flies, copper john barrs, small spinners, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla below Fenton Lake was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Salmon snagging was very good this past week for anglers working near the Pine arm boat ramp and at the south corner of the dam. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good for anglers using drop shot rigs, leeches, Ricos, crank baits and tubes. Anglers reported catching bass at depths of 5-to-23 feet. Fishing for northern pike was fair for anglers using crank baits and spinner baits. Fishing at night was fair using cut bait, stink bait and liver for catfish. Trout fishing in the snagging areas was good for anglers using roe sacs, salmon eggs and power bait.  

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Fishing was slow.    

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Trout fishing was good for anglers using night crawlers, power bait and salmon eggs.

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 983cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters this past weekend was fair for anglers using Griffith’s gnats, dead chickens, pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms and streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using wooly worms, night crawlers, salmon eggs and spinners.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing for bass was good at the Central Pond. Anglers did well using senkos, worms and spinners. Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good using chicken liver, worms and stink bait. Fishing for trout was slow.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:            We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BURN LAKE:                        Fishing was slow for all species.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was good using jigs, crank baits, spinners and grubs for white bass. The best reports again this week came from anglers fishing near the dam. Fishing was slow-to-fair trolling crank baits at 10-to-17 feet for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was good using crank baits, spinners and jigs for white bass. Anglers did well fishing near Long Point and McRae Canyon. Fishing was fair-to-good using whacky worm rigs, drop shot rigs and top water lures for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait for catfish. Most of the cats were taken by anglers fishing over baited holes. A few striped bass were taken by anglers using live bait, jigs and umbrella rigs.  

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.   

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 107cfs. Fishing on the Forks was fair-to-good using small wooly buggers, prince nymphs and copper john barrs for trout.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and worms.       

PERCHA DAM:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.    

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was fair for anglers using jerk baits, inline spinners and spoons for tiger musky.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 990cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

SNOW LAKE:                      Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.   

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species.  

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, spinners, flies under a bubble and salmon eggs.

BOSQUE REDONDO:          We had no reports from anglers this week.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.  This would be a good lake for anglers to practice different casting and tackle techniques.

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE

                RESERVOIR:         We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms. 

JAL LAKE:                            Fishing was slow for all species.

LAKE VAN:                          We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 90cfs. Fishing was fair using night crawlers, shrimp and minnows for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 2.0cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was fair using top water lures, leeches, crank baits, tubes and drop shot rigs for largemouth and smallmouth bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was fair for anglers using whacky worm rigs, grubs and crank baits for walleye and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
