ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

October 20, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

San Juan River: On October 12, Brian Wagner of Aztec, NM caught a 24 inch rainbow trout. He was fishing the Simone Canyon area and using a dry fly.

 

Cochiti Lake: On October 12, Calvin Sanchez of Los Lunas caught a 28 inch, 6.5 pound walleye. He was using a crankbait.

 

Abiquiu Lake: On October 20, John Tapia of Espanola caught a 5.5 pound walleye. He was trolling a perch colored Grappler Shad in 21 feet of water.

 

El Vado Lake: On October 20, Matt Pelletier of Albuquerque caught a 17.5 inch 4 pound largemouth bass. He was slow rolling a Panther Martin near the dam.    

 

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:        We had no reports from anglers this week.

CHARETTE LAKES:      Fishing was good using power bait, salmon eggs and spinner/worm combinations for trout. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Charette Lakes close for the season on October 31.

CIMARRON RIVER:       Water flow Monday morning below Eagle Nest was 40cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using copper john barrs, spinners, worms and salmon eggs.   

CLAYTON LAKE:           Fishing was good using power bait, worms and home made dough bait for trout, bluegill and a few catfish. Fishing pressure was light. The lake closes for the season on October 31.

CONCHAS LAKE:          Fishing was slow-to-fair using tubes, worms, grubs, crank baits and spinner baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. A few walleye were taken by anglers using jig and minnow combinations and grubs. We had no reports on other species.

COYOTE CREEK:         Fishing was slow.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:     Kokanee snagging really picked up this past week as several anglers reported taking limits working near the boat ramp, mid lake and at the south end. Fishing for trout was good for anglers trolling spinners and still fishing with power bait, salmon eggs and roe sacs.

HOPEWELL LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:    The area received 3-to-4 inches of snow over the past weekend. Trout fishing was very good at both lakes. Anglers did well using pink Pistol Petes, Rooster Tails, salmon eggs, power bait and home made dough baits.  

LOS PINOS:                  We had no reports from anglers this week.

MAXWELL LAKES:        We had no reports from anglers this week. Maxwell Lakes close for the season on October 31.      

MCALLISTER LAKE:      There has been a fish kill on the lake and there are no plans to restock the lake with trout at this time. The lake closes for the season on October 31.

MONASTERY LAKE:     Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, cheese, salmon eggs and power bait.

MORPHY LAKE:           Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners. Morphy Lake closes for the season on October 31.

PECOS RIVER:             Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 34cfs. Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs and small pheasant tail nymphs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing below Cowles. 

RED RIVER:                  Water flow below the hatchery was 57cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper john barrs, wooly buggers, worms and spinners.

RIO GRANDE:               The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 434cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using copper john barrs, wooly buggers, salmon eggs, spinners and night crawlers. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using wooly buggers.

SPRINGER LAKE:         We had no reports from anglers. The lake closes for the season October 31.

STORRIE LAKE:            Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using cheese, salmon eggs and power bait.

UTE LAKE:                   Fishing pressure was light this past week due to windy conditions. However, a few anglers managed to get on the water and they found that fishing was good for walleye and for smallmouth bass. The best walleye action was at 40-to-50 feet and anglers did best using jig and live bait combinations. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good using crank baits across points in 5-to-20 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:             Fishing was fair-to-good trolling crank baits at 20-to-30 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair for anglers using tubes and crank baits in 5-to-20 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.    

BLUEWATER LAKE:     Fishing was generally slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

CHAMA RIVER:             Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 91cfs and 52cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good for anglers using night crawlers, wooly buggers, green copper John Barrs and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:             Fishing was slow-to-fair using crank baits and tubes for a mix of white bass, smallmouth bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.

FENTON LAKE:             Trout fishing was very good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.

HERON LAKE:              Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and roe sacs.  Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10 and any kokanee caught while fishing for trout must be immediately released.

JEMEZ WATERS:          Water flow on the Jemez River on Monday morning was 23cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good this past week using copper john barrs, prince nymphs, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla below Fenton Lake was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:             Salmon snagging was quite good for anglers working near the south corner of the dam. Trout fishing was good in this same area for anglers using roe sacs, power bait, salmon eggs and corn. The best trout action was reported by anglers fishing at night. Fishing for catfish was also good for anglers fishing at night. They were using cut bait, stink bait and worms and fishing north of the Pine arm marina.  Fishing for smallmouth bass slowed some but a few were taken by anglers using Robo worms and tubes at depths of 15-to-30 feet. They were fishing in Francis Canyon and up the San Juan arm of the lake. We had no reports on other species. 

RAMAH LAKE:  We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.    

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:     Trout fishing was fair using spinners, night crawlers, cheese, power bait and salmon eggs.

SAN JUAN:                   Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 508cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for anglers using egg patterns, San Juan worms, pheasant tail nymphs and small streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using garlic cheese, wax worms, wooly worms, night crawlers, salmon eggs and spinners.

TINGLEY BEACH:         We had no reports from anglers this week.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:           We had no reports from anglers this week.  

BILL EVANS LAKE:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

BURN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species.     

CABALLO LAKE:           Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light. A few white bass were taken by anglers using grubs and minnows.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:       Night fishing was good for anglers using live shiners for catfish. One angler reported catching 4 catfish over 4 pounds, 3 over 2 pounds and 3 between 1 and 2 pounds this past week. He was fishing from the bank. Fishing was fair using jigs, grubs, live bait and crank baits for white bass. A few smallmouth bass and largemouth bass were taken by anglers using crank baits, lizards, tubes and senkos. Fishing was slow-to-fair using live bait in 12-to-30 feet of water for striped bass.

GLENWOOD POND:      We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:       Fishing was slow for all species.   

GILA RIVER:                 Water flow near Gila on Monday was 99cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good using wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

LAKE ROBERTS:          Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and wooly buggers.       

PERCHA DAM:             Fishing was slow for all species.    

QUEMADO LAKE:         Fishing was slow for all species.

RIO GRANDE:               Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 577cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

SNOW LAKE:               Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners, Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.   

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:             Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners for trout.    

BONITO LAKE:              Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, power bait, spinners, flies under a bubble and salmon eggs.

BOSQUE REDONDO:    We had no reports from anglers this week.   

BRANTLEY LAKE:         Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:   We had no reports from anglers this week. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms. 

JAL LAKE:                    Fishing was slow for all species.

LAKE VAN:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE:      The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331. 

PECOS RIVER:             Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 83cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, shrimp and worms for channel catfish.

RUIDOSO RIVER:          Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 1.4cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:     Fishing was fair using spinner baits, crank baits, tubes and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.   

SUMNER LAKE:            Fishing was fair using jig and grub combinations for walleye at the north end of the lake. Fishing was fair using tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.
