ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

October 27, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Ute Lake: On October 24, Ivory Williamson of Logan caught a 4.56 pound walleye. He was using a jig and minnow combination.

 

Sumner Lake: On October 26, Margaret Gunter of Albuquerque caught a 1.2 pound crappie. She was using a night crawler on a crappie rig and fishing at the south end of the lake. On October 27, Mark Gunter of Albuquerque caught a 26 inch, 5.3 pound walleye. He was trolling a chartreuse colored DT-10 Rapala at 23 feet.

 

Rio Grande: On October 27, Jim Swartz of Las Cruces caught a 33 pound flathead catfish. He was fishing the river below Caballo Lake and using a minnow.

This one’s a couple weeks old but worth mentioning. On October 15, Michael Burdette of Dexter, NM caught a 27 inch brown trout. He was fishing the river between Elephant Butte and Caballo and using an artificial mouse.

 

Heron Lake: On October 27, Anthony Rodriguez of Alcalde, NM caught a 21 inch lake trout. He was fishing near the dam and using yellow power bait.  

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using gold spinners and spoons. A few trout were also taken on salmon eggs and power bait.

CIMARRON RIVER:            Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, small copper john barrs, small micro mays and small spinners.   

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing was fair using crank baits, tubes, drop shot rigs and worms for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Most of the fish were small. Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver and dough bait for catfish. A few walleye were taken by anglers using jigs, grubs and Wally Pop/worm rigs. A few white bass were taken by anglers using minnows and crank baits.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn, worms and small gold spinners.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Kokanee snagging was good this past week. Anglers did well working the west side and the northeast area near the Honey Hole. Trout fishing was good from the bank on the west side. Best baits were roe sacs and salmon eggs. Trolling for trout was good for anglers using Panther Martins and Platte River specials on light line.  

HOPEWELL LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing was good at both lakes this past week. Anglers did well using home made dough baits, power bait, salmon eggs, cheese and small bead head nymphs.

LOS PINOS:                          Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, egg pattern flies, copper john barrs and spinners.  

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was good for anglers using corn, cheese, salmon eggs and power bait.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 33cfs. Fishing was good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs and small pheasant tail nymphs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 59cfs. Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers, egg patterns, copper john barrs and spinners.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 365cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using wooly buggers, muddler minnows, salmon eggs, spinners and night crawlers. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using wooly buggers and Gulp minnows.  A few northern pike were taken by anglers using small swim baits, jerk baits and bunny leeches.

SPRINGER LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.  

STORRIE LAKE:                  Fishing was very good this past week for anglers using cheese, salmon eggs and power bait for 12-to-14 inch trout. We had no reports on other species.

STUBBLEFIELD

             LAKE:                       We had no reports from anglers this week.  

UTE LAKE:                           Walleye fishing was good this past week for anglers using jig and minnow combinations at 25-to-35 feet. A few walleye were also taken on crank baits and grubs worked at the same depths. Fishing was fair using crank baits across rocky points for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using cut bait, liver and shrimp for catfish. Most of the catfish were taken by anglers fishing at night. There were a few white bass caught but they were scattered and found at depths of 10-to-40 feet and were taken on minnows, crank baits and grubs.  

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Walleye fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spoons and Reef Runner Ripshads. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 22-to-30 feet. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using Gulp minnows, tubes and crank baits. We had good bass reports from the Canones Creek area and from the upper end of the lake. A few brown trout were taken by anglers fishing for walleye and bass.  We had no reports on other species.    

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing pressure was very light again this past week but there were a few tiger musky caught by anglers using husky jerks and swim baits. Most of the action was between the boat ramp and the dam. Fishing for all other species was very slow.

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 91cfs and 50cfs respectively. Fishing in both areas was fair for anglers using spinners, night crawlers, wooly buggers, copper john barrs and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, liver and dough baits for catfish. Most of the action was up the channel on the main lake.  A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using crank baits, spinner baits and minnows. We had no reports on other species.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing slowed down some this past week. Anglers described the action as sporadic as a few fish were taken on salmon eggs and power bait and a few on Pistol Petes and small wooly buggers.

HERON LAKE:                     Trout fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, power bait and roe sacs.  Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10 and any kokanee caught while fishing for trout must be immediately released.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Water flow on the Jemez River on Monday morning was 23cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper john barrs, prince nymphs, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas and on East Fork was fair using small bead head nymphs. Fishing on the Cebolla below Fenton Lake was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Salmon snagging was fair this past week. Most of the action was near the south corner of the dam. Trout fishing along the dam was fair for anglers using roe sacs, power bait, salmon eggs and corn. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers fishing at night. They were using cut bait, stink bait and roe sacs and fishing north of the Pine arm marina.  Fishing for smallmouth bass was rated as slow-to-fair using tubes, drop shot rigs and grubs at 17-to-25 feet. Most of the bass action this past week was on the San Juan arm of the lake. We had no reports on other species. 

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Trout fishing was slow.    

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 737cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was slow-to-fair for anglers using egg patterns, parachute adams, dead chickens, San Juan worms and small pheasant tail nymphs. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using garlic cheese, wax worms, salmon eggs and spinners.

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing at the Catch and Release pond was very good for anglers using bead head nymphs, streamers and dark bunny leeches. Fishing at the Central Pond was fair using liver and dough bait for catfish and small crank baits and Gulp minnows for bass.  

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 Fishing was slow for all species.   

BILL EVANS LAKE:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

BURN LAKE:                        Fishing was slow for all species.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Walleye fishing was fair for anglers using grubs, minnows and crank baits. The best reports came from anglers fishing near the dam. A few white bass were taken by anglers fishing for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was fair using crank baits, drop shot rigs, tubes and sweet beavers for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Fishing for white bass was fair for anglers using spoons, jigs, crank baits and live bait. A few walleye were taken by anglers fishing for white bass and using spoons and crank baits. Night fishing was fair for anglers using live shiners for catfish. Fishing for striped bass was slow but a few were taken by anglers using live bait, spoons and jigs.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.   

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 99cfs. Fishing was fair using wooly buggers and spinners for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.        

PERCHA DAM:                   Fishing was slow for all species.    

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was slow for all species.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 13cfs. Fishing this stretch was slow but anglers fishing below Caballo did very well. They were using live bait and caught several white bass and flathead catfish.

SNOW LAKE:                      We had no reports from anglers this week.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Fishing was slow for all species.    

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs and olive colored dry flies.

BOSQUE REDONDO:          We had no reports from anglers this week.   

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       Fishing was slow for all species.

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:       Fishing was slow. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms. 

JAL LAKE:                            We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN:                          We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park will be draining the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PERCH LAKE:                      We had no reports from anglers this week.   

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 83cfs. Fishing was fair using minnows, shrimp and worms for channel catfish.  We had no reports on other species.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 1.4cfs. Fishing was slow. A few trout were taken by anglers using small dry flies.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was fair using crank baits, tubes and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass.  Anglers fishing for bass also picked up a few walleye. We had no reports on other species.   

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was good trolling chartreuse crank baits and using chartreuse wally pops tipped with night crawlers for 16-to-26 inch walleye. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 20-to-23 feet. Fishing was fair using night crawlers at the south end of the lake for a mix of bluegill, crappie, walleye and catfish. Fishing was fair using tubes, grubs and crank baits for smallmouth and largemouth bass.
