ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

November 3, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Elephant Butte Lake: On October 25, Tom Johnson of T or C caught a 25 inch, 8.5 pound largemouth bass. He was fishing a local tournament and using a crank bait. On November 3, Dave Thielman of Albuquerque caught a 3.1 pound largemouth bass while working a tube in a foot of water near the dam.

 

San Gregorio Lake: On October 28, Donna Herrera of Rio Rancho caught a 20 inch rainbow trout. She was using rainbow glitter power bait.

 

Lake Maloya: This one’s a bit old but just received. On October 9, Pete Mileta of Raton caught a 23 inch rainbow trout. He was using yellow power bait.

 

Ute Lake: On November 4, Kathy Leal of Logan caught a 6.37 pound walleye. She was using a custom Ruf Nec spoon.  

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CANJILON LAKES:            Trout fishing was good for anglers using small Kastmasters, salmon eggs and power bait.

CIMARRON RIVER:            We had no reports from anglers this week.

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing was slow-to-fair using crank baits, tubes, drop shot rigs and worms for smallmouth and largemouth bass. A few walleye were taken by anglers using jig and minnow combinations and spoons. The walleye were at depths of 25-to-40 feet. We had no reports on other species.

COYOTE CREEK:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, corn, worms and small gold spinners.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           Kokanee snagging slowed some this past week. Best areas were near Six Mile Creek and the Honey Hole. Fishing was good using worms for perch and power bait, roe sacs, salmon eggs, corn and spinners for trout. Trout fishing was good from boats and from the bank.   

HOPEWELL LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       Trout fishing continued to be good at both lakes this past week with considerably lighter fishing pressure. Anglers did well using home made dough baits and a variety of small bead head nymphs.

LOS PINOS:                          We had no reports from anglers this week.

MONASTERY LAKE:         Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using corn, cheese, salmon eggs and power bait.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 34cfs. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using small gold spinners, worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs and small pheasant tail nymphs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 51cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, night crawlers, wooly buggers, egg patterns and copper john barrs.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 405cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using wooly buggers, jerk baits, salmon eggs, spinners and night crawlers. A few northern pike were taken by anglers using small jerk baits, spinners and bunny leeches.

SPRINGER LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.  

STORRIE LAKE:                  Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers using cheese, salmon eggs and yellow power bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

STUBBLEFIELD

             LAKE:                       We had no reports from anglers this week. 

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing for walleye was very good this past week. Anglers did well using slab spoons at 40-to-50 feet. A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using tubes, crank baits and jig and minnow combinations. Fishing for all other species was slow. Fishing pressure was very light. 

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 Walleye fishing was fair for anglers using spoons, Gulp minnows and Rip Shad in 20-to-40 feet of water. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using tubes, 4 inch worms, spinner baits and crank baits.  We had no reports on other species.    

BLUEWATER LAKE:         Fishing was slow-to-fair using jerk baits, swim baits and spinners for tiger musky. Fishing for trout and catfish was slow.

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 91cfs and 50cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good for anglers using Panther Martins, night crawlers and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  We had no reports from anglers this week.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.

FENTON LAKE:                   Trout fishing was slow.

HERON LAKE:                     Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and roe sacs.  Anglers are reminded that kokanee snagging does not open here, on Willow Creek or on the Pine River until November 10 and any kokanee caught while fishing for trout must be immediately released.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Water flow on the Jemez River on Monday morning was 24cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using copper john barrs, salmon eggs, power bait and worms. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was fair using small bead head nymphs. Fishing on the Cebolla below Fenton Lake was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Salmon snagging slowed down considerably this past week and the fish appear to be getting soft. The best snagging was near the south corner of the dam. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair for anglers using three and four inch worms and tubes. Most of the bass came from 12-to-25 feet of water off main lake and secondary points. Fishing for rainbow trout was slow-to-fair for anglers using roe sacs, salmon eggs, power bait and corn. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN GREGORIO

                    LAKE:                Trout fishing was slow.    

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 744cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for anglers using small egg patterns, dead chickens, RS2s, small red annelids, San Juan worms and small pheasant tail nymphs. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using garlic cheese, wax worms, salmon eggs and spinners.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Trout fishing was fair for anglers using small Kastmasters, gold spinners, salmon eggs and power bait.          

TINGLEY BEACH:               Fishing at the Catch and Release pond was very good again this past week for anglers using bead head nymphs, streamers and bunny leeches. Fishing at the Central Pond was fair using liver and dough bait for catfish and small crank baits and Gulp minnows for bass. 

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.   

BILL EVANS LAKE:            Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species. 

BURN LAKE:                        We had no reports from anglers this week.     

CABALLO LAKE:               Walleye fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using minnows, spoons and crank baits. A few white bass were taken by anglers fishing for walleye. We had no reports on other species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was very good for anglers using tubes, Robo worms, Gulp worms and crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Most of the bass were taken in less than 8 feet of water. Fishing was fair-to-good using slab spoons, crank baits and jerk baits for white bass and walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using live bait and fishing at night. We had no reports on other species. 

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was slow for all species.   

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 74cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait and wooly buggers.        

PERCHA DAM:                   Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, spinners and prop flies.     

QUEMADO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 13cfs. Fishing this stretch was slow. Below Caballo, fishing was fair-to-good using minnows for catfish and white bass. A few white bass were also taken on grubs.

SNOW LAKE:                      Trout fishing was fair for anglers using prop flies, spinners and salmon eggs.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners, cheese and power bait.    

BONITO LAKE:                   Trout fishing was fair for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, prop flies and olive colored dry flies.

BOSQUE REDONDO:          We had no reports from anglers this week.   

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       Trout fishing was fair for anglers using corn, salmon eggs, power bait and small spoons.  

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:       Fishing was slow. Rainbow trout stocking has been temporarily suspended while the Village of Ruidoso treats the lake to control algae blooms. 

JAL LAKE:                            We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN:                          Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners. We had no reports on other species.   

MANZANO LAKE:             Trout fishing was very good for anglers using Panther Martins, Super Dupers and power bait.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park has drained the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PERCH LAKE:                      Trout fishing was fair for anglers using spinners, salmon eggs and power bait.  

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 6.3cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Water flow will remain low while work is being done on the dam.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 1.4cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was slow-to-fair using shallow running crank baits and tubes for smallmouth bass. Most of the bass were caught in less than 8 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.   

SUMNER LAKE:                  Fishing was very good using crank baits, jerk baits and plastics in 7-to-10 feet of water for largemouth and smallmouth bass. There were several bass caught in excess of 3 pounds. We had no reports on other species.
