New Mexico FISHING REPORT
November 17, 2007
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Storrie Lake: No big fish here but a big day for a
young anglers. On November 11, Brandy Lujan age
7 of Santa Fe caught her first limit of
trout. She was fishing with her dad and using garlic cheese and
yellow power bait.
Chama River: On November 16, Hector Pinero of Albuquerque caught a 19 inch brown trout. He
was using a silver Panther Martin. On the same
day Jim Butler caught a 19.5 inch brown while using
a gold Panther Martin, Dan Colton caught a
20 inch brown on a Rapala jerk bait and Debbie Burns
caught a 19 inch rainbow on salmon eggs. On
November 18, Phil Lovato of Albuquerque caught a 22
inch brown trout. He was using a Panther Martin.
NORTHEAST AREA
CANJILON LAKES: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using worms
and power bait.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing
was slow-to-fair using slab spoons at 26-to-30 feet for walleye and white bass.
A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using spinner baits, spoons and
tubes. We had no reports on other species.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout
fishing was fair this past week for anglers using salmon eggs and spinners.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Kokanee snagging slowed down this past week but the fish
were still in good shape. The best areas were near the boat ramp and the Six
Mile Creek area. Trout fishing was good from the bank and from anchored boats
using power bait, roe sacs and salmon eggs. There were also several good size
trout taken by anglers trolling spinners and Pistol Petes on light line.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good this past
week for anglers using home made dough baits and power bait. The trout ranged
in size from 8-to-11 inches. Fishing with spinners and flies was slow.
LOS PINOS: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
MONASTERY LAKE:
Trout fishing was fair for anglers
using power bait, corn and salmon eggs.
PECOS RIVER: Water
flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 31cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good
for anglers using salmon eggs, copper john barrs, night crawlers and power bait.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the
hatchery was 33cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using dry/dropper
combinations with most hitting copper john barrs as droppers. A few trout were
also taken on salmon eggs and spinners.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 595cfs. Fishing was
slow for all species.
SPRINGER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout
fishing was very good again this past week. Anglers caught limits of trout
using yellow and chartreuse power bait and garlic cheese. We had no reports on
other species.
STUBBLEFIELD
LAKE: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Fishing for walleye and
white bass continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did well using
slab spoons at
depths of 32-to-45 feet. The best reports came from anglers using
green/chartreuse, red/white and hot pink spoons. We had no reports on other
species.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Smallmouth bass fishing was
slow-to-fair again this past week. Anglers did best using tubes and grubs. We
had no reports on other species.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers
using salmon eggs, BWOs, parachute adams, corn and
small spinners. The best reports came from anglers fishing the Corrales,
Bernalillo and Albuquerque Drains.
BLUEWATER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 93cfs and 56cfs respectively.
Fishing below El Vado was good for anglers using salmon eggs, jerk baits and Panther
Martins for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing
was fair using jigging spoons and Gulp minnows for a mix of white bass and
smallmouth bass. We had no reports on
other species. Fishing pressure was very light.
EL VADO LAKE: Fishing was
slow for all species.
JACKSON LAKE: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using green and chartreuse power bait.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee
snagging slowed some this past week and fishing pressure was much lighter than
the previous week. Anglers did best working the Salmon Run and Willow Creek
areas. Fishing for rainbow trout was good for anglers trolling chartreuse Mepps
and Cripplures at 22-to-25 feet. Most of the trout caught were in the 12-to-14
inch range.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez River on
Monday morning was 23cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using copper john
barrs, elk hair caddis, small gold spinners and salmon eggs. Our best reports
came from anglers fishing just above the town of Jemez Springs.
LAKE
FARMINGTON: Trout fishing was good
for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, homemade dough baits and cheese. A few trout were also taken on spinners.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
pressure was very light this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers
fishing from the bank and using power bait and roe sacs. Kokanee snagging was
slow. We had no reports on other species.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN GREGORIO
LAKE: Trout fishing was slow.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 758cfs. Trout fishing through
the Quality Waters was fair-to-good for anglers using parachute adams, small egg patterns, leech patterns, pheasant tail
nymphs, small red annelids, San Juan worms and sparkle worms. Fishing through
the bait waters was fair-to-good using garlic cheese, wax worms, night
crawlers, copper john barrs, salmon eggs and spinners.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using small spoons, salmon eggs and power bait.
TINGLEY BEACH: Trout fishing was good this past
week for anglers using salmon peach, yellow and white power baits, power eggs,
olive Pistol Petes and salmon eggs. At
the Catch and Release Pond best flies were foam black ants, hoppers, bunny
leeches, wooly buggers and orange San Juan worms.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair
for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: Trout fishing was good
for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, cheese, and spinners. We had no reports on other species.
BURN LAKE: Trout fishing was slow with just a few taken by anglers using power bait.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species. A few white bass were taken by anglers using grubs
and minnows.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was fair for anglers using tubes, finesse worms, spoons
and crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using slab spoons, crank
baits and live bait for white bass and walleye. Anglers did well at the mouth
of McRae Canyon and near Kettle Top. A few striped bass were taken by anglers
using live bait. We had no reports on other species.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs, cheese and spinners.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow near Gila on Monday was 62cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: Trout
fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 13cfs. Fishing this stretch was slow. Below Caballo,
fishing was fair-to-good using minnows and grubs for catfish and white bass.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, cheese and power bait.
BONITO LAKE: Trout
fishing was good for anglers using power bait, worms, salmon eggs, spinners and
wooly buggers. The lake will close for the season November 30.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power
bait and flies under a bubble. We had no reports on other species.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Rainbow
trout stocking has resumed but we had no reports from anglers this week.
JAL LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair using corn, power bait and salmon eggs.
LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair
for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
OASIS PARK
LAKE: The State Park has drained
the lake for maintenance and renovation. Work is expected to be completed
within the next few weeks. For more information contact the park office at
505-356-5331.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair
for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and Pistol Petes.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 11cfs.
Fishing for trout was good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was .97cfs. Trout
fishing was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was
good using tubes and deep running crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth
bass. The surface temp this past week
ranged from 52-to-56 degrees. We had no reports on other species. Fishing
pressure was very light.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good this
past week for anglers using tubes, worms, spinner baits and crank baits for
largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using jigging spoons and jig
and minnow combinations for walleye. We had no reports on other species.
