New Mexico FISHING REPORT
November 24, 2007
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Ute Lake: On November 25, Jeff Cooper from
the Amarillo, TX area caught a 6.2 pound walleye. He
was using a blade bait at the time.
Santa Rosa Lake: On November 25, Dave
Thielman of Albuquerque caught a 5.5 pound largemouth
bass. On the same day, Brian Stangel of
Albuquerque caught a 4 pound largemouth bass and Rick
Soto of Santa Fe caught a 22 inch walleye.
They were all using shallow crank baits and fishing in less
than 10 feet of water.
NORTHEAST AREA
CANJILON LAKES: We had no reports from anglers this week.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing
was fair using slab spoons at 29-to-35 feet for walleye. We had no reports on
other species.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Kokanee snagging appeared to be winding down over the
weekend. There were a few fish snagged at the main boat ramp area and near the
Honey Hole. Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn and roe sacs. With the colder temperatures, some ice
has been forming around the edge of the lake but coming off during the day. For
updated conditions, check with the state park office at 505-377-1594.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was fair at both lakes this
past week. Anglers did best using power baits and home made dough baits.
MONASTERY LAKE:
We had no reports from anglers
this week.
PECOS RIVER: Water
flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 34cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good
down to and through the Villanueva State Park using spinners, salmon eggs,
copper john barrs and power bait. The state park area received about 9 inches
of snow over the holiday weekend.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the
hatchery was 31cfs. Before the snow, trout fishing was good for anglers using
wooly buggers, copper john barrs, worms and salmon eggs.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 508cfs. Fishing continued
to be slow for all species.
SPRINGER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout
fishing was very good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait. Most
of the fish caught were in the 12-to-14 inch range. We had no reports on other
species.
UTE LAKE: Slab spoons and blade
baits continued to be productive this past week for anglers fishing for walleye
and white bass. Anglers reported good success working the edge of the main channel
at depths of 35-to-45 feet. We had no reports on other species.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing pressure was very light
this past week. A few brown trout were taken by anglers fishing the upper lake
coves and using spinners and deep running crank baits. We had no reports on
other species.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, copper
john barrs, wax worms, corn and small spinners. The best reports came from
anglers fishing the Belen, Bernalillo and Albuquerque Drains.
BLUEWATER LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 93cfs and 56cfs respectively.
Fishing below El Vado was very good this past week for anglers using salmon
eggs, night crawlers, bead head nymphs and Panther Martins for a mix of brown
and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.
COCHITI LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
EL VADO LAKE: Fishing was
slow for all species.
JACKSON LAKE: Trout
fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.
FENTON LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using power eggs, spinners and power bait. There
was some ice forming around the edges of the lake on Monday but with warmer
temperatures predicted, it should clear by mid week.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee
snagging was slow for some but anglers working near the dam over the past
weekend caught their limits. Fishing was fair using roe sacs, power bait and
power eggs for rainbow trout and small lake trout. A few trout were also taken
by anglers trolling assorted spinners at 20-to-25 feet.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez River on
Monday morning was 19cfs. Trout fishing was fair using copper john barrs, small
gold spinners and salmon eggs. Our best reports again this week came from
anglers fishing just above the town of Jemez Springs. Fishing was slow on the
Guadalupe and Cebolla.
LAKE
FARMINGTON: Trout fishing was fair
for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, homemade dough baits and cheese.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
pressure was very light again this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers
fishing near the Pine arm boat ramp and using roe sacs, power bait and salmon eggs.
A few smallmouth bass were taken by anglers fishing on the San Juan arm and
using drop shot rigs with small plastics. The fish were 20-to-30 feet deep. We
had no reports on other species.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 246cfs. The flow was dropped to accommodate stream
maintenance work which is expected to last about a week. Trout fishing this
past week through the Quality Waters was fair-to-good for anglers using small
egg patterns, leech patterns, pheasant tail nymphs, small
red annelids and San Juan worms. Fishing through the bait waters was good using
garlic cheese, wax worms, copper john barrs, salmon eggs and spinners.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
TINGLEY BEACH: At the Youth Pond and the Central
Pond, trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon peach, yellow and white
power baits, white power eggs, olive Pistol Petes and Super Dupers. At the Catch and Release Pond best flies were chamois
leeches, white bunny leeches, olive wooly buggers and Pistol Petes.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers
this week.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: Trout fishing was good
for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, worms and spinners. A few bluegill were
taken on worms.
BURN LAKE: Trout fishing was slow with just a few taken by anglers using power bait.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species. A few white bass were taken by anglers using grubs,
crank baits and minnows.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was fair for anglers using tubes, finesse worms
and shallow running crank baits for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair-to-good using slab spoons,
crank baits and live bait for white bass and walleye. A few striped bass were
taken by anglers using umbrella rigs and live bait. We had no reports on other
species.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Trout fishing
was slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow near Gila on Monday was 64cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and night crawlers.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 19cfs. Fishing this stretch was slow. Below Caballo,
fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows, liver, worms and grubs for catfish and
white bass.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.
BONITO LAKE: Trout
fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and wooly
buggers. The lake will close for the season November 30.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon
eggs, power bait and flies under a bubble. We had no reports on other species.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout
fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon
eggs and spinners.
JAL LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair using corn, power bait and salmon eggs.
LAKE VAN: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
OASIS PARK
LAKE: The State Park has drained
the lake for maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park
office at 505-356-5331.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was
12cfs. Fishing for trout was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs
and power bait.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair
for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and Pistol Petes.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was .97cfs. Trout
fishing was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was
very good this past weekend for anglers using tubes, shallow running crank
baits and robo worms for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Anglers fishing for bass also caught a few
walleye. We had no reports on other species.
SUMNER LAKE: There were no reports from
anglers this past week but the bass and walleye should still be active. Give it
a try with slab spoons for walleye and small plastics and crank baits for bass.
