ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

December 15, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CONCHAS LAKE:               We had no reports from anglers this week.   

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           As of this past Sunday there was a thin layer of ice on the lake that was unsafe for ice fishing. For updated conditions, check with the state park office at 505-377-1594.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       As of Monday there was still some open water at Lake Maloya. Trout fishing was slow but a few fish were taken by anglers using power bait and home made dough bait. Lake Alice was covered with a thin layer of ice that was unsafe for fishing.

MONASTERY LAKE:         We had no reports from anglers this week.   

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 32cfs. Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using copper john barrs, wax worms and salmon eggs.  

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 40cfs. Trout fishing was slow but a few trout were taken by anglers using copper john barrs, salmon eggs and wooly buggers.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 440cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

SPRINGER LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.  

STORRIE LAKE:                  As of Monday, there was a thin layer of ice around the shore line. We had no reports from anglers.

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing was good using jigs and slab spoons for white bass and catfish. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 28-to-45 feet. We had no reports on other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.   

ALBUQUERQUE 

   AREA DRAINS:                Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, small spinners, parachute adams, copper john barrs, worms, corn and power eggs. We had good reports from the Belen, Bernalillo and Albuquerque Drains.

BLUEWATER LAKE:         As of Monday, there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. For updated conditions contact the state park office at 505-876-2391.  

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 307cfs and 396cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, wooly buggers, Panther Martins, small spoons and copper john barrs, spinners and wooly buggers for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  We had no reports from anglers this week.

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.

JACKSON LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE:                   As of Monday, there was a thin layer of ice covering the lake. At this time, it is unsafe for ice fishing. Contact the state park office at 505-829-3630 for updated conditions.

HERON LAKE:                     Bank fishing was slow-to-fair using roe sacs, power bait, salmon eggs and power eggs for rainbow trout. Fishing pressure was very light. We had no reports on other species.  

JEMEZ WATERS:               Fishing on the Jemez River was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, bead head hares ears and copper john barrs for trout.  The best reports came from anglers fishing below Soda Dam. We had no reports on other streams

LAKE FARMINGTON:       As of Wednesday this past week, trout fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs, worms, cheese and spinners.  

NAVAJO LAKE:                  There were no reports from anglers this week.  

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 723cfs.  Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair-to-good for anglers using San Juan worms, bunny leeches, egg patterns, small bead head pheasant tail nymphs and dead chickens. Fishing through the bait waters was fair-to-good using jerk baits, garlic cheese, worms, copper john barrs and power eggs.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        As of Monday there was some ice forming on the lake. Anglers are reminded that the lake is closed to ice fishing.                

TINGLEY BEACH:               At the Youth Pond and the Central Pond, trout fishing was very good using yellow power bait, white power eggs and olive Pistol Petes. A few trout were also taken on worms. At the Catch and Release Pond best flies were small midges and scuds. A few trout were also caught by anglers using egg patterns and hoppers.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.       

BILL EVANS LAKE:            Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, worms, and corn/egg combinations. A few trout were also taken on spinners.  

BURN LAKE:                        Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and power bait.

CABALLO LAKE:               We had no reports from anglers this week.    

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was fair-to-good using slab spoons and jigs for white bass. A few white bass were also taken on live bait and crank baits. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow but a few fish were taken by anglers using drop shot rigs and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.  

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           Fishing was fair using power bait, corn, salmon eggs and power eggs for trout. A few fish were also taken on worms and spinners.       

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 250cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.          

PERCHA DAM:                   Fishing was slow for all species.     

QUEMADO LAKE:             Fishing was slow for all species.    

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 7.7cfs. Look for the deeper pools on this stretch as it was recently stocked with rainbow trout.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair using spinners, salmon eggs and power bait.      

BOSQUE REDONDO:          Trout fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, corn, power bait and wet flies under a bubble.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       Trout fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners.  

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:       Trout fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners. 

JAL LAKE:                            Trout fishing was fair for anglers using cheese, salmon eggs and power bait.    

LAKE VAN:                          Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait. We had no reports on other species.    

MANZANO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.   

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park has drained the lake for maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 14cfs. Fishing was good using power bait, salmon eggs, home made dough bait and corn for trout. We had no reports on other species.

PERCH LAKE:                      We had no reports from anglers this week.    

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 5.6cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing for largemouth bass was fair for anglers using senkos and Roboworms on split shot rigs in 8-to-12 feet of water. This report was provided by anglers who fished mid week when water temps were ranging from 42-to-45 degrees and air temps were 37-to-50 degrees. We had no reports on other species.
