"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

December 22, 2007

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

San Juan River: On December 16, Jason Adkins caught a 22 inch rainbow trout. He was using an orange sparkle worm and fishing the upper flats. On December 18, Mayo Aragon of Albuquerque caught a 22 inch rainbow while fishing Last Chance Run. He was using a sunset colored egg pattern.

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CONCHAS LAKE:               Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.    

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           As of Monday the ice was still considered unsafe for ice fishing. For updated conditions, check with the state park office at 505-377-1594.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       As of Monday there was a thin layer of ice covering Lake Maloya. It was unsafe for fishing.  At Lake Alice the ice was about 6 inches thick and anglers were advised to fish at their own risk. Contact the state park office at 505-445-5607 for updated conditions.

MONASTERY LAKE:         We had no reports this week. Anglers are reminded that this lake is closed to ice fishing.   

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near Anton Chico as of Monday morning was 21cfs. Trout fishing downstream from I-25 was fair for anglers using copper john barrs, egg patterns and salmon eggs.  

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 42cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 558cfs. Fishing was slow. A few trout were taken by anglers using spinners.

SPRINGER LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.  

STORRIE LAKE:                  As of Monday, there was a thin layer of ice around the shore line. We had no reports from anglers.

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing was good using jigs and slab spoons for white bass and catfish. Most of the fish were taken at depths of 28-to-45 feet.  The white bass appear to be moving up the Canadian and Ute Creek arms. Walleye fishing was sporadic but a few good size fish were taken by anglers using slab spoons and jigs. We had no reports on other species.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.   

ALBUQUERQUE 

   AREA DRAINS:                Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, small spinners, copper john barrs, egg patterns, wax worms, corn and power eggs.

BLUEWATER LAKE:         As of Monday, there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. For updated conditions contact the state park office at 505-876-2391.  

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 176cfs and 144cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, wooly buggers, Panther Martins, small spoons and copper john barrs, spinners and wooly buggers for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.  

EL VADO LAKE:           Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.

FENTON LAKE:                   As of Sunday the ice was only about 2 inches thick and considered unsafe for ice fishing. Contact the state park office at 505-829-3630 for updated conditions.

HERON LAKE:                     Bank fishing was slow-to-fair using roe sacs, power bait, salmon eggs and power eggs for rainbow trout. Fishing pressure was very light.

JACKSON LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Water flow on the Jemez River as of Monday was 27cfs. Fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and copper john barrs and fishing the river downstream from the Soda Dam. We had no reports on other Jemez waters.

LAKE FARMINGTON:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was extremely light.   

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 723cfs.  Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was very good for anglers using orange sparkle worms, sunset colored egg patterns black beauties, bead head pheasant tails and San Juan worms. Anglers with the best success were fishing slow and deep. Fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, garlic cheese, power bait, wooly buggers, copper john barrs and power eggs.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        As of Monday there was some ice forming on the lake. Anglers are reminded that the lake is closed to ice fishing.                

TINGLEY BEACH:               At the Youth Pond and the Central Pond, trout fishing was very good using garlic and cheese power baits, power eggs, wax worms and olive Pistol Petes. At the Catch and Release Pond best flies were egg patterns, leeches, small midges and scuds.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, spinners and worms.        

BILL EVANS LAKE:            Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, wooly buggers, power bait, salmon eggs and worms.

BURN LAKE:                        Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and power bait.

CABALLO LAKE:               We had no reports from anglers this week.    

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was fair using slab spoons, crank baits and jigs for white bass.  Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow again this past week but a few fish were taken by anglers using drop shot rigs and spinner baits. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.  

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow near Gila on Monday was 164cfs. Fishing was slow.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 Trout fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs and small spoons.          

PERCHA DAM:                   We had no reports from anglers this week.       

QUEMADO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers but trout fishing should be good as several thousand rainbow trout were stocked this past week.    

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 10cfs. Look for the deeper pools on this stretch as it was recently stocked with rainbow trout.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, power eggs and power bait.      

BOSQUE REDONDO:          Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners.

BOTTOMLESS

 LAKES:                 Fishing was slow.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       The lake will be drained right after the 1st of the year and will remain so at least through February 2008.  

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:       Trout fishing was fair this past week for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners.  

JAL LAKE:                            Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait.    

LAKE VAN:                          Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and power bait. We had no reports on other species.    

MANZANO LAKE:             Trout fishing was fair using power eggs and garlic power bait.    

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park has drained the lake for maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 15cfs. Fishing was very good using power eggs, salmon eggs, power bait, home made dough bait and corn for trout. We had no reports on other species.

PERCH LAKE:                      Trout fishing was fair using power bait, power eggs and Pistol Petes under a bubble.    

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 3.0cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing for largemouth bass and an occasional walleye was fair for anglers using jigs. Most of the fish were caught in 8-to-20 feet of water. The water surface temp as of the 23rd ranged from 39-to-42 degrees. We had no reports on other species.

SUMNER LAKE:                  We had no reports from anglers this week.
