"Lures of the Month" from ABQ Sportfishing and Bob "Lucky" Lechel:
ABQ's pick is the Berkley 4" PowerGrub - Milky Salt and Pepper Popular for all species of fish, especially in colder water. A flexible bait for a variety of rigging options. Like Bob, we prefer a 1/4 ball head for our structure fishing.
Lucky's choice: Yamamoto Single Tail Grub - White or Chartreuse It’s hard to beat a 3 or 4” grub in chartreuse or white on ¼ to 3/8 oz jig head for the walleye, crappie, and bass this time of year. Look for deepwater near points anywhere from 20-40ft of water on the main lake. It helps to use your electronics to find them, but it’s a great way to brush up on your video gaming/fishing at the same time.

New Mexico FISHING REPORT

January 26, 2008

This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.

Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

New Mexico

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

 

Bill Evans Lake: On January 19, Miriam Clark age 8 of Las Cruces caught a double; a 15 inch and a 16 inch rainbow trout. She was using salmon eggs and cheese.

 

Ute Lake: On January 22, Wayne Venable of Clovis caught a 5 pound largemouth bass. He was using a Rat-L-Trap and fishing the Ute Creek arm of the lake.

 

 

NORTHEAST AREA

 

CONCHAS LAKE:               We had no reports from anglers this week.

EAGLE NEST LAKE:           As of Monday the ice was 16-to-17 inches thick. Fishing this past week was sporadic at best. A few anglers reported success using ice jigs tipped with salmon eggs for trout. A few perch were taken on earthworms and wax worms.

LAKE MALOYA/

LAKE ALICE:       As of Monday there was about 15-to-16 inches of ice at Lake Maloya and 10-to-12 inches at Lake Alice. Trout fishing was good at both lakes for anglers using home made dough baits. A few trout were also taken on salmon eggs.

MONASTERY LAKE:         We had no reports this week. Anglers are reminded that this lake is closed to ice fishing.   

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow near Anton Chico as of Monday morning was 20cfs. Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon eggs and copper john barrs.

RED RIVER:                          Water flow below the hatchery was 66cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

RIO GRANDE:                      The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 501cfs. Fishing was slow-to-fair using large bunny leeches for northern pike. Fishing for all other species was slow.

STORRIE LAKE:                  The lake was covered with a thin layer of ice this past weekend but the winds on Monday opened up the south end to bank fishing. We had no reports from anglers.  

UTE LAKE:                           Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.  

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE:                 There is a thin layer of ice extending out about 100 yards around the entire lake. There is no fishing at this time.

ALBUQUERQUE 

   AREA DRAINS:                Trout fishing was good and for some excellent this past week. Anglers did very well using wax worms, small spoons, salmon eggs, egg patterns, small wooly buggers and copper john barrs.

BLUEWATER LAKE:         We had no reports from anglers this week. For updated ice conditions contact the state park office at 505-876-2391.  

CHAMA RIVER:                  Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 96cfs and 200cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair for anglers using spinners, streamers and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

COCHITI LAKE:                  Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.    

EL VADO LAKE:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

FENTON LAKE:                   As of Monday, the ice was still about 17 inches thick. Trout fishing was fair during the past week and picked up over the weekend. Anglers did well using wax worms, salmon eggs and ice jigs for brown and rainbow trout.

HERON LAKE:                     We had no reports from anglers this week.

JACKSON LAKE:                We had no reports from anglers this week.

JEMEZ WATERS:               Trout fishing on the Jemez River was slow-to-fair using salmon eggs, egg patterns and copper john barrs.

LAKE FARMINGTON:       We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE:                  Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.

RAMAH LAKE:   We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN:                          Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 832cfs.  Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for anglers using leeches, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, bead head pheasant tails, orange sparkle worms and desert storms. Fishing slow and deep continues to be the best method at this time. Water clarity was just over a foot. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using garlic cheese, salmon eggs and spinners.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE:        Anglers are reminded that the lake is closed to ice fishing.         

TINGLEY BEACH:               At the Youth Pond and the Central Pond, trout fishing was fair using leeches, Super Dupers, power bait, Velveeta cheese and salmon eggs. At the Catch and Release Pond best baits were micro eggs, BWOs, emergers and scuds.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.         

BILL EVANS LAKE:            Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using garlic cheese and salmon eggs. A few fish were also taken by anglers using power bait and spinners.   

BURN LAKE:                        Trout fishing was fair using garlic cheese, power bait and garlic eggs.

CABALLO LAKE:               Fishing was slow for all species.     

ELEPHANT BUTTE:           Fishing was generally slow for all species. There were a few white bass and walleye taken by anglers using live bait, white grubs and slab spoons. A few striped bass were taken on live bait. We had no reports on other species.

GLENWOOD POND:           We had no reports from anglers this week.  

ESCONDIDA LAKE:           We had no reports from anglers this week.

GILA RIVER:                         Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 575cfs. Fishing here and on the Forks was slow.

LAKE ROBERTS:                 We had no reports from anglers this week.           

PERCHA DAM:                   Fishing was slow for all species. A few small white bass were taken by anglers using minnows.        

QUEMADO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE:                      Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 15cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs and power bait. Fishing on the river below Caballo is slow.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE:                 Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using garlic cheese, salmon eggs, power bait and spinners.        

BOSQUE REDONDO:          Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners.

BOTTOMLESS

 LAKES:                 Fishing was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.

BRANTLEY LAKE:             Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. 

CARLSBAD

     MUNICIPAL LAKE:       The lake is being drained to accommodate maintenance work and will remain so at least through February. 

GRINDSTONE

RESERVOIR:       Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, cheese, spinners and power bait.

JAL LAKE:                            We had no reports from anglers this week.     

LAKE VAN:                          Trout fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using garlic cheese, worms, salmon eggs and power bait.

MANZANO LAKE:             We had no reports from anglers this week.

OASIS PARK LAKE:          The State Park has drained the lake for maintenance and renovation. For more information contact the park office at 505-356-5331.

PECOS RIVER:                      Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 27cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

PERCH LAKE:                      We had no reports from anglers this week.

RUIDOSO RIVER:                Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 3.7 cfs. Trout fishing was slow but there were a few fish taken by anglers using salmon eggs.

SANTA ROSA LAKE:        Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.  

SUMNER LAKE:                  Walleye fishing this past week was good for anglers using minnows, worms, Reef Runners, deep diving Rapalas, yellow jigs and slab spoons. We had no reports on other species.
