New Mexico FISHING REPORT
February 9, 2008
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Tingley Beach: On February 8, Evan Sedillo, age 7 of Albuquerque caught a 19 inch rainbow
trout. He was fishing the youth pond and using orange power bait.
Sumner Lake: On
February 9, James Brophy of Los Alamos, Dan Brophy of Espanola and Mike
Alvarado of Santa Fe caught several walleye that weighed between 5 and 5.5
pounds. They were using Leprechaun slab spoons.
NORTHEAST AREA
CHARETTE LAKES: Open
for the season March 1st.
CLAYTON LAKE: Opens for the season March 1st.
CONCHAS LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: As of Monday the ice was 19-to-22 inches thick. Fishing for
trout and perch this past week was sporadic. Best baits were roe sacs, corn, salmon
eggs, wax worms and ice jigs.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: As of Monday there was about 17 inches of
ice at Lake Maloya and 13 inches at Lake Alice. Trout fishing was rated as very
good at Lake Alice and fair-to-good at Maloya. Best bait this past week was
homemade dough bait.
MAXWELL LAKES Open for
the season March 1st.
MCALLISTER LAKE Opens for the
season March 1st but may not be stocked until later this spring or
early summer as the lake is currently experiencing a golden algae bloom.
MONASTERY LAKE:
We had no reports this week.
Anglers are reminded that this lake is closed to ice fishing.
PECOS RIVER: Water
flow near Anton Chico as of Monday morning was 22cfs. Trout fishing through the
Villanueva state park area was fair for anglers using salmon eggs. The water
clarity ranges from clear to cloudy through the day.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the
hatchery was 59cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 494cfs. Fishing was
slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
STORRIE LAKE: There
has been a thin layer of ice around the edges through the early morning hours
but it usually clears of by around 10a.m. Trout fishing has been fair for
anglers using salmon eggs and corn.
UTE LAKE: Fishing was slow this
past week but there were a few walleye taken by anglers using slab spoons and
fishing at depths of 32-to-40 feet. We had no reports on other species.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: There is a layer of ice extending
out about 100 yards around the entire lake. There is no fishing at this time.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers
using wax worms, salmon eggs, parachute adams, small
wooly buggers and copper john barrs. Anglers reported good success at the
Albuquerque, Corrales and Bernalillo Drains.
BLUEWATER LAKE: The ice thickness varies from very thin
to moderate and is not considered safe for ice fishing at this time. For updated ice conditions contact the state
park office at 505-876-2391.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 135cfs and 102cfs
respectively. We had no reports from anglers this week.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.
EL VADO LAKE: Heavy snow
kept anglers out of the area and off the lake this past week.
FENTON LAKE: As of
Monday, the ice was still about 18 inches thick. Trout fishing was fair for
anglers using salmon eggs.
HERON LAKE: As
of Monday, the lake was covered with ice and about 3-to-4 feet of snow. We had
no reports from anglers.
JACKSON LAKE: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of
Monday morning was 35cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing through and below
town was fair-to-good for anglers using copper john barrs and salmon eggs.
LAKE
FARMINGTON: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.
RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake was raised to 1,000cfs as of Monday, will rise to
2,000cfs today and will be at 3,000cfs by Wednesday. Flows are expected to
remain at this level until May. Prior to
the increase in flows, trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair for
anglers using leeches, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, orange sparkle worms and desert
storms. You might want to add a little more weight to the wet flies while the
flows are up. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using garlic cheese, salmon
eggs, worms and jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Anglers are
reminded that the lake is closed to ice fishing.
TINGLEY BEACH: At the Youth Pond and the Central
Pond, trout fishing was good using leeches, Rapalas, power bait, cheese and
Super Dupers. At the Catch and Release Pond best baits were leeches, egg
patterns, scuds and Griffiths gnats.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Trout fishing was fair-to-good
for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs. A few fish were also taken on
spinners.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: Trout fishing was fair
for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and cheese.
BURN LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
CABALLO LAKE: Angler
activity picked up but fishing was slow for all species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing
was slow with only a few white bass taken by anglers using slab spoons and
jigs. We had no reports on other species.
GLENWOOD POND: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 107cfs. Fishing here and on the
Forks was slow.
LAKE ROBERTS: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: There was
some thin ice around the shoreline this past week. We had no reports from
anglers.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 13cfs. Trout fishing was fair for anglers using worms,
salmon eggs and power bait. Fishing on the river below Caballo was slow.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs,
spinners, flies under a bubble and corn.
BOTTOMLESS
LAKES: Fishing
was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: The lake is being drained to
accommodate maintenance work and will remain so at least through February.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout
fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using salmon eggs, cheese and power bait.
JAL LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: Trout fishing was fair-
for anglers using power baits, cheese, worms and salmon eggs.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
OASIS PARK
LAKE: The lake
reopened to fishing on February 5th with a healthy stocking of
rainbow trout. Fishing this past week has been very good for anglers using
power bait, salmon eggs, worms, corn and cheese. Fishing pressure has been
heavy.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 27cfs.
Fishing was slow for all species.
PERCH LAKE: Trout fishing was slow.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 2.1cfs. We had no
reports from anglers this week.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers again this week.
SUMNER LAKE: Walleye fishing continued to
be quite good for some anglers this past week. They were fishing near the dam
and up on the Alamogordo arm of the lake. Anglers did well using slab spoons,
jig and Gulp combinations, bottom bouncer/worm and bottom bouncer/minnow rigs. Most
of the fish were taken at depths of 22-to34 feet. In addition to the walleye,
anglers picked up several white bass, a few crappie
and a spotted bass.
