New Mexico FISHING REPORT
May 31, 2008
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Navajo Lake: On May
26, Trystan Howze, age 5 of
Albuquerque caught a 23 inch northern pike. He was fishing near Sims Mesa and
using a minnow.
Lake Maloya: On May 30, Mike Litt of
Raton caught a 3 pound rainbow trout. He was fishing near the dam and using a
spinner.
Conchas Lake: On May
30, Franco Vallejos of Albuquerque caught a 4.8 pound largemouth bass. He was
using a green pumpkin tube and fishing brush in about 10 feet of water. On May 31, Rick Hipp
of Albuquerque caught two 4 pound walleye. He was using tubes and fishing in
about 10 feet of water.
Abiquiu Lake: On June
1, Greg Rich of Los Alamos caught a 26.5 inch, 5 pound 8 ounce walleye. He was
using a grub/minnow combination and fishing in about 15 feet of water.
NORTHEAST AREA
CHARETTE LAKES: Trout
fishing on the lower lake was good for anglers using power bait, gold spinners,
worms and spinner/worm combinations. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow near Cimarron as of Monday was 37cfs. Trout
fishing was very good for anglers using small gold spinners, copper john barrs,
gold bead hares ears, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes
was fair-to-good using Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.
CLAYTON LAKE: Anglers fishing from boats had the best luck this past
week as they reported catching several limits of trout, some good walleye and a
few bass. Best baits for trout were spoons and spinners. The walleye and bass
were taken by anglers using spinner/worm combos, crank baits and tubes. We had
no reports on other species.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing
for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was quite good again this past week.
Anglers did well using tubes, senkos, jigs, crank baits, jerk baits, grubs,
spinner baits and top water lures. Most of the bass activity was reported by
anglers fishing on the north side of the lake. Fishing for crappie was fair-to-good
for anglers using minnows, tubes, grubs and jigs. Walleye fishing was good for
anglers using white, pumpkin and watermelon grubs, jigs and tubes. There were
also several taken on chrome, fire tiger and orange belly crank baits. Fishing
for catfish was good using liver, shrimp and night crawlers. Fishing for
bluegill was good using worms. We had no reports on other species.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout
fishing was slow this past week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Trout fishing from the bank and from boats was very good
this past week. Anglers doing best were using orange spinners, spoons and power
bait. A few good size trout were also taken on Pistol Petes. Fishing for
kokanee was fair-to-good trolling christmas tree/worm and christmas tree/fly
combinations fairly shallow. A few perch were taken on worms.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was very
good this past week. Anglers did well using gold colored super dupers, spinners
and spoons, gold bead wooly buggers and sherbet power bait. Several trout caught were in the 15-to-17 inch
range. Fishing at Lake Alice was fair for anglers using spinners and power
bait.
MAXWELL LAKES Trout fishing was slow.
MCALLISTER LAKE Due to poor water quality, the lake
will remain closed until further notice.
MONASTERY LAKE:
Trout fishing was good for anglers
using salmon eggs, spoons, Pistol Petes and corn.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was very good for
anglers using yellow power bait, salmon eggs and worms.
PECOS RIVER: Water
flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 479cfs. Trout fishing this
past week was a bit slow with the high water but a few fish were taken by
anglers using spinners, night crawlers and copper john barrs.
RED RIVER: Water
flow below the hatchery was 343cfs. The water was murky. Trout fishing was
slow.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 3,060cfs. Fishing was
slow for all species.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using Rat-L-Traps and
large in line spinners for northern pike. Fishing was fair using cut bait and liver
for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout
fishing was good this past week for anglers using garlic cheese, power bait and
salmon eggs. Fishing for catfish was fair using worms and liver. The water was
stained and was dropping.
STUBBLEFIELD: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Fishing for catfish
was very good this past week for anglers fishing at night and using night
crawlers, liver and shrimp. Fishing for crappie was good using minnows, jigs
and small tubes. Fishing was good trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs
and crank baits across main lake points and flats for walleye. Fishing was good
trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth
bass was good using jigs, spinner baits, crank baits jerk baits and top water
lures. Fishing was good using worms and small jigs for bluegill.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing continued to be very
good this past week for anglers using tubes and shallow running crank baits in 5-to-10
feet of water for smallmouth bass. Most of the action was along the northeast
side of the lake. Several walleye and
rainbow trout were taken by anglers trolling crank baits and using grubs and
minnows at the upper end of the lake. Most of the walleye were in the 16-to-19
inch range. We had no reports on other species. The water was stained and the
surface temp ranged from 57-to-60 degrees.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was fair this past week for
anglers using liver and dough bait for catfish. A few tiger musky were caught
by anglers fishing from boats and using jerk baits and large spinners. Trout
fishing was slow.
CANJILON LAKES:
We had no reports from anglers
this week.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 2,190cfs and 1,730cfs
respectively. Trout fishing was slow due to the high water conditions.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing
was fair for anglers using shrimp, liver and night crawlers for catfish.
Fishing was slow-to-fair using spinner baits, chatter baits and jigs for
largemouth bass. A few white bass were taken by anglers using crank baits,
spinners and jigs. We had no reports on other species.
EL VADO LAKE: Fishing for
rainbow trout continued to be quite good this past week. Anglers did well using
orange spinners and spoons, power bait and salmon eggs. Most of the action was
reported by anglers fishing near the dam.
FARMINGTON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using black Pistol Petes, Kastmasters, salmon
eggs, power bait, corn and night crawlers.
HERON LAKE: Fishing
from the bank was fair this past week for anglers using orange power bait and
orange Dynamacks for lake trout and rainbows. The lakers were all in the 3-to-4
pound class. Fishing from boats was slow.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of
Monday morning was 96cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez, the
San Antonio, East Fork and the Rio Las Vacas was good for anglers using small
gold and silver spinners, copper john barrs, worms, salmon eggs, and small
stone flies.
LAGUNA Del
CAMPO: (Burns Canyon Lake) Trout
fishing was very good this past week for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait
and cheese.
MANZANO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good
using power bait, cheese, salmon eggs and spinners.
MCGAFFEY LAKE: Fishing was fair using
corn/marshmallow combinations for catfish. A few were also taken by anglers
using worms.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
was fair using minnows, jigs and tubes for crappie. The best action was
reported by anglers fishing the Pine arm, La Jara and Bancos Canyon. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass
was fair-to-good for anglers using jerk baits, tubes, crank baits, senkos,
worms and top water lures. Fishing for northern pike was good using crank
baits, jerk baits and spinner baits. There were several pike taken by anglers
fishing the San Juan arm, the Pine arm and along the main lake shore line.
Fishing for kokanee was slow but there were a few taken by anglers trolling
deep with spinners tipped with corn on the main lake. Trout fishing was rated as slow.
RAMAH LAKE: Fishing
was slow. The water was high and very murky.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was at 5,070cfs and will remain
around 5,000cfs until June 19. The flow will then be reduced over the next
several days to 500cfs. Trout fishing from boats was fair-to-good using bright
colored San Juan worms and egg patterns. A few fish were also taken on hair
jigs, wooly buggers and parachute adams. Fishing
through the bait waters was fair using wooly buggers, night crawlers, spinners and
jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout
fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using spinners, small crank baits, power
bait, salmon eggs and worms.
SEVEN SPRINGS
BROOD POND: It’s just for kids under 12 and
the trout fishing was good this past week. Best bait was power bait. A few
trout were also taken on salmon eggs and spinners.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was fair for bluegill, catfish and bass. Anglers did best using worms and small tubes for the bluegill, crank baits, tubes and jerk baits for the bass and dough bait and power bait for the catfish. At the Catch and Release Pond trout fishing was fair-to-good early and late in the day for anglers using parachute adams, scuds, blue winged olives, tricos and egg patterns.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Fishing for trout and bluegill
was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and worms. Fishing for catfish
was good for anglers using night crawlers, dough bait and liver.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: Fishing was slow for all
species.
BURN LAKE: Fishing
was slow.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing
was slow-to-fair using crank baits, minnows and grubs at the north end of the
lake for white bass. A few walleye and
crappie were taken by anglers using minnows, crank baits, tubes and jigs. We had no reports on other species. The water
was quite murky.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing
for white bass and crappie was very good for anglers fishing near Rock Canyon
Marina. They were fishing from the bank and using 2-to-4 inch lemon and
chartreuse grubs. There were also several white bass taken by anglers trolling crank
baits and using minnows, grubs and tubes near McRae Canyon and Marina del Sur. Fishing was fair using grubs off main lake points
for walleye, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers also reported
catching largemouth bass while using top water lures, crank baits, jigs and
spinner baits. Fishing for catfish was good using cut bait, night crawlers, shrimp
and liver. A few striped bass were taken by anglers using live bait, jigs and
top water lures. The best action on top water was by anglers fishing at night.
We had no reports on other species.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms, liver
and dough bait for catfish.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 45cfs. Trout fishing on the Forks
was slow.
LAKE ROBERTS: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was fair using grubs and minnows for white bass and a few walleye. A few
catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and liver.
QUEMADO LAKE: Fishing
was slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for
trout.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 2,070cfs. Fishing on
the river below Williamsburg and below Caballo was fair using minnows, grubs
and crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Fishing
was fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BONITO LAKE: Effective
May 1, the lake was closed due to high fire danger in the area. Look for
updates from the Lincoln National Forest for additional information.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair for anglers using night crawlers for
catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BOTTOMLESS
LAKES: Fishing
was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners, spoons
and Pistol Petes.
JAL LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: Fishing was
slow-to-fair for angler using worms and night crawlers for catfish. We had no
reports on other species.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was
98cfs. Fishing was slow.
PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday
was 1.4cfs. Trout fishing was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Walleye fishing
was good this past week. Anglers did well using chartreuse and green grubs and
fire tiger and chrome crank baits. Most of the walleye were in shallow water.
Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was very good for anglers using
senkos, crank baits, tubes, jigs, salt craws and top water lures. Anglers
fishing for bass also reported catching several good size crappie
while using grubs and tubes.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing for walleye was good
this past week for anglers using crank baits, grubs, bottom bouncer/night
crawler rigs and tubes. Most of the walleye caught were in the 14-to-16 inch
range. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good from the bank
and from boats using jerk baits, crank baits, tubes and top water lures. Fishing
was fair using night crawlers and dough baits for catfish.
Crews stocked 17,295 rainbow trout
averaging 10.5 inches in the following waters: CIMARRON
RIVER-West of Cimarron, CIMARRON RIVER
GRAVEL PIT LAKES, COW CREEK,
GALLINAS ICE POND, GALLINAS RIVER-Near Las
Vegas, GLENWOOD POND, LA JUNTA
CREEK, LAKE ALICE-Sugarite Canyon, LAKE
MALOYA, MONASTERY LAKE, PECOS
RIVER-Cowles to Village of Pecos, RED
RIVER-Above and Below Questa, RIO PUEBLO, SAN
JUAN RIVER-Below Quality
