New Mexico FISHING REPORT
June 7, 2008
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
San Juan River: On
June 1, Bart Carver caught and released a 9 pound rainbow trout. He was fishing
the Quality Waters and using a streamer.
Clayton Lake: On June
4, Ryan Cotton, age 6 of Littlefield, TX caught a 9pound 2 ounce walleye. He
was using night crawlers.
Grindstone Reservoir:
On June 5, Christopher Tafoya of Belen caught a 19
inch rainbow trout.
Abiquiu Lake: On June
6, Peter J. Tafoya of Santa Fe caught a 21 inch, 4
pound walleye. He was using a swim shad on a drop shot rig in 15-to-20 feet of
water. On June 7, Greg Rich of Los Alamos caught a 26 inch 5.2 pound walleye.
He was using a dark colored bomber off a windblown point in about 15 feet of
water.
Navajo Lake: On June
7, Chris Kinley of Durango, CO caught a 6.55
largemouth bass. On June 7, Shaun Gill of Clovis caught a 4.15 pound smallmouth
bass. He was using a crank bait.
Ute Lake: On June 8,
Brian Huffines of Amarillo, TX caught a 5.65 pound largemouth bass. He was
using a spinner bait.
NORTHEAST AREA
CHARETTE LAKES: Trout
fishing on the lower lake was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, worms and power
bait and trolling cow bell/worm combinations. Most of the fish were in the
8-to-11 inch class with a few up to 15 inches. Fishing for perch was fair using
worms.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow near below Eagle Nest as of Monday was 7cfs. Trout
fishing was good for anglers using small gold spinners, salmon eggs and worms. Fly
anglers did well using dry/dropper combinations with small copper john barrs
and gold bead hares ears. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair-to-good
using Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.
CLAYTON LAKE: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using
night crawlers, power bait and spinners. A few walleye were taken by anglers
using night crawlers. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was
light due to strong winds in the area.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing
for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair-to-good for anglers using
tubes, senkos, crank baits, jerk baits, grubs and top water lures. Fishing for
crappie was fair-to-good for anglers using minnows, tubes, grubs and jigs. Most
of the crappie activity was reported by anglers fishing near the north dock
area. Walleye fishing was good for anglers using crank baits, grubs, jigs and tubes.
There were some good catches reported from both the north and south sides of
the lake. Fishing for catfish was fair using liver, shrimp and night crawlers. Fishing
for bluegill was good using worms and flies.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout
fishing was slow this past week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Trout fishing from the bank and from boats was good this
past week when the winds settled down. Anglers did well using Platte River
specials, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, Kastmasters, worms and power bait.
Fishing for kokanee was fair trolling christmas tree/worm and christmas
tree/fly combinations. A few perch were taken on worms.
HOPEWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was very good for anglers using power bait,
salmon eggs, spinners and olive and black wooly buggers. Anglers did well from
the bank and from float tubes.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was good
this past week. Anglers did well using super dupers, spinners and spoons, gold
bead wooly buggers and sherbet power bait. Fishing at Lake Alice was fair for anglers
using spinners and power bait.
MAXWELL LAKES Trout fishing was slow. Fishing
pressure was light.
MCALLISTER LAKE Due to poor water quality, the lake
will remain closed until further notice.
MONASTERY LAKE:
Trout fishing was good for anglers
using corn, power bait, salmon eggs and small spinners.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was good for
anglers using yellow power bait, salmon eggs, spinners, Pistol Petes and worms.
PECOS RIVER: Water
flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 312cfs. Trout fishing this
past week was fair for anglers using spinners, night crawlers, wooly worms and wooly
buggers.
RED RIVER: Water
flow below the hatchery was 306cfs. The water was murky. Trout fishing was slow
but a few were taken by anglers using spinners and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 2,360cfs. We had no
reports from anglers this week.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using Rat-L-Traps,
Rapalas and large in line spinners for northern pike. A few catfish were taken
by anglers using worms. We had no reports on other species.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using garlic cheese, power
bait and salmon eggs. Fishing for catfish was fair using worms and liver. The
water was stained and was dropping.
STUBBLEFIELD: Fishing
was fair using crank baits and grubs for walleye. We had no reports on other
species.
UTE LAKE: Fishing for
smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was good using senkos, lizards, worms,
spinner baits, jerk baits and top water lures. Most of the bass were taken in
less than 12 feet of water. Fishing for catfish was good for anglers fishing at
night and using night crawlers, liver and shrimp. Fishing for crappie was fair-to-good
using minnows, jigs and small tubes. Fishing was fair-to-good trolling bottom
bouncer/night crawler rigs and crank baits across main lake points and flats
for walleye. Fishing was good trolling crank baits at depths of 12-to-20 feet for
white bass. Fishing was good using worms and small jigs for bluegill.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good this
past week for anglers using drop shot rigs and crank baits and fishing for
smallmouth bass. Anglers reported catching bass in the Canones Creek area and
the upper areas of the lake. Fishing was fair using crank baits, grubs and drop
shot rigs and trolling Wally Pops tipped with Gulp for walleye. A few rainbow
trout and brown trout were taken by anglers trolling crank baits at the upper
end of the lake. The water surface temp ranged from 57-to-62 degrees through
the week. Anglers fishing from boats should watch for floating debris.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good this past week
for anglers using liver and dough bait for catfish. A few tiger musky were
caught by anglers fishing from boats and using jerk baits and large spinners.
Trout fishing was slow but a few were taken by anglers using spinners, power
bait, corn and worms.
CANJILON LAKES:
We had no reports from anglers
this week.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 1,410cfs and 1,810cfs
respectively. Trout fishing was slow due to the high water conditions.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing
was slow-to-fair for anglers using liver and night crawlers for catfish.
Fishing was fair using spinner baits, chatter baits and large plastics for
largemouth bass. A few northern pike were taken by anglers using spinner baits
and crank baits. A few white bass were taken by anglers using crank baits,
spinners and jigs. We had no reports on other species.
EL VADO LAKE: Fishing for rainbow trout and brown
trout was fair for anglers using spinners, spoons and power bait and fishing
between the main boat ramp and the dam.
FARMINGTON LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms and dough bait for catfish.
A few trout were taken by anglers using worms, spinners, power bait and salmon
eggs.
FENTON LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using brassies, copper john barrs, Pistol Petes,
Kastmasters, salmon eggs, power bait, corn and night crawlers.
HERON LAKE: Fishing
was slow for all species. The water level was rising and the water was murky.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of
Monday morning was 60cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez, the
San Antonio, East Fork, Guadalupe and the Rio Las Vacas was good for anglers
using hoppers, royal wulffs, small gold and silver spinners, worms, salmon eggs,
and small stone flies.
LAGUNA Del
CAMPO: (Burns Canyon Lake) We had no reports from anglers this week.
MANZANO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power
bait, cheese, salmon eggs and spinners.
MCGAFFEY LAKE: Fishing was fair using
corn/marshmallow combinations, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
was fair using jigs and tubes for crappie. The best action was reported by
anglers fishing Francis Canyon, La Jara and Bancos Canyon. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass
was fair-to-good for anglers using jerk baits, baby brush hogs, tubes, crank
baits, senkos, worms and top water lures. Fishing for northern pike was good
using crank baits, jerk baits and spinner baits. Most of the pike action was
reported by anglers fishing the San Juan arm. Fishing for trout and kokanee was
slow-to-fair for anglers trolling the main body of the lake and using Arnies
and Panther Martin spinners. Fishing for
bluegill was fair for anglers using worms. The water level was dropping.
RAMAH LAKE: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was at 5,090cfs and will remain
around 5,000cfs until June 19. The flow will then be reduced over the next
several days to 500cfs. Trout fishing from boats was fair-to-good using streamers,
wooly buggers, hair jigs, bright colored San Juan worms and egg patterns. Fishing
through the bait waters was fair using wooly buggers, night crawlers, spinners and
jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
SEVEN SPRINGS
BROOD POND: It’s just for kids under 12 and
the trout fishing was good this past week. Best baits were salmon eggs and power
bait.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing at the Youth and Central
Ponds was fair for bluegill, catfish and bass. Anglers did best using worms for
the bluegill, crank baits, tubes and spinners for the bass and dough bait and
power bait for the catfish. Trout
fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs and power bait. At the Catch and
Release Pond trout fishing was fair-to-good early and late in the day for
anglers using parachute adams, scuds, blue winged
olives, tricos and egg patterns.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers
this week.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: Fishing was fair using
small wet flies and worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.
BURN LAKE: Fishing
was slow.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing
was slow-to-fair using crank baits, minnows, tubes and grubs at the north end
and near the dam for white bass. A few
walleye were taken by anglers using minnows, crank baits and grubs. A few crappie were taken by anglers using tubes and jigs. We had no reports on other species. The water
was quite murky.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Striped
bass fishing was great for some anglers but just slow-to-fair for others. Those
who did best were using live shiners and gizzard shad and spending considerable
time searching for the fish. Most were taken at depths of 12-to-28 feet. Fishing
for white bass and crappie was fair for anglers fishing near Rock Canyon Marina
and in McRae Canyon. Anglers did best fishing in the evening hours and using
grubs, tubes and crank baits. Anglers also reported catching several small
white bass near Long Point while using spinners and grubs. A few largemouth and
smallmouth bass were taken by anglers using spinner baits, chatter baits, grubs
and top water lures. Fishing for catfish
was fair using cut bait, night crawlers, shrimp and liver. Anglers using live
bait and crank baits and fishing for white bass and stripers reported catching
a few walleye. We had no reports on other species.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms and dough
bait for catfish.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 30cfs. We had no reports from
anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing
was fair using worms, night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. We had no
reports on other species.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was fair using grubs, crank baits and minnows for white bass and a few walleye.
QUEMADO LAKE: Fishing
was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, Pistol Petes and
spinners for trout.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 2,520cfs. Fishing on
the river below Caballo was fair using minnows, grubs and crank baits for white
bass and a few walleye. We had no reports on other species.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: Fishing
was fair-to-good using worms, dough bait and liver for catfish. Anglers
reported good fishing in the early morning and late evening hours. We had no
reports on other species.
BONITO LAKE: Effective
May 1, the lake was closed due to high fire danger in the area. Look for
updates from the Lincoln National Forest for additional information.
BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was good for anglers using night crawlers and stink
bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
BOTTOMLESS
LAKES: Fishing
was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs.
JAL LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 100cfs.
Fishing was slow.
PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday
was .75cfs. Trout fishing was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing slowed
a bit for walleye and bass this past week. Anglers did manage to pick up a few
walleye while trolling the main channel and using grubs in brush in 8-to-12
feet of water. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was best for anglers
using senkos, crank baits, tubes, brush hogs, salt craws and top water lures. A
few crappie were taken by anglers using grubs. A major
water release is planned for next week and is expected to last about one week.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing for walleye was rated
as slow-to-fair this past week. Anglers did manage to pick up several keeper
size fish while using grubs, tubes, minnows and bottom bouncer/night crawler
rigs. Fishing for largemouth bass and
smallmouth bass slowed down also but a few good size bass were taken by anglers
using top water lures, crank baits, tubes and salt craws. We had no reports on other species.
Crews stocked 28,453 rainbow trout
averaging 10.0 inches in the following waters: ANIMAS RIVER,
AZTEC POND, CEBOLLA RIVER, CHAMA
RIVER-Above El Vado, COSTILLA CREEK,
EAGLE ROCK LAKE, ESTANCIA PARK LAKE, FENTON
LAKE, GRANTS MUNICIPAL
POND-River Walk Pond, HARRIS LAKE, HOLY
GHOST CREEK, HONDO RIVER, JEMEZ
RIVER, LAKE FARMINGTON, MANZANO LAKE,
MONASTERY LAKE, MORA-Pecos River
Drainage, MORPHY RESERVOIR, MT VIEW PONDS,
PANCHUELA CREEK, PECOS RIVER-
Cowles to Village of Pecos, QUEMADO LAKE,
RIO LAS VACAS, SAN ANTONIO RIVER, SEVEN
SPRINGS BROOD POND, STORRIE RESERVOIR &
WINSOR CREEK.
In addition, crews stocked 3,465 channel
catfish averaging 17.1 inches in length in the following
waters: BATAAN LAKE, BLUEWATER LAKE, CORONA
POND, ESTANCIA PARK LAKE,
FISHING CLINIC WATERS, GRANTS MUNICIPAL
