New Mexico FISHING REPORT
June 28, 2008
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Fenton Lake: On June
22, Keenan Horn, age 9 caught a 21 inch brown trout. He was using a wooly
bugger.
Elephant Butte: On
June 25, Jason Wright of Ft. Bliss, TX caught a 37 pound striped bass. He was
using a gizzard shad and fishing in 10 feet of water.
Ute Lake: On June 26,
Ivory Williamson of Logan caught an 8.31 largemouth
bass. He was using stink bait.
Maxwell Lake 13: On
June 28, Willy Trujillo and his daughter Mary of Springer caught 6 rainbows
ranging in size from 18-to-22 inches. They were using power bait.
Pecos River: On June
29, Stephen Apodaca of Stanley caught a 22.5 inch
rainbow trout. He was fishing north of Terrero and
using worms.
Conchas Lake: On June 29, Sebastian Tietjen
of Los Lunas caught a 27” walleye. He was trolling a Reef Runner 200 Ripshad in Pink Lemonade.
Abiquiu Lake: On June
30, Amy Anderson and her husband Stan Kosiewicz
caught and released several big walleye including a 28 inch 8 pound beauty.
They were trolling bottom bouncer/worm combinations and assorted crank baits
over 16-to-25 feet of water at the upper end of the lake.
NORTHEAST AREA
CHARETTE LAKES: Trout
fishing on the lower lake was fair-to-good for some anglers but slow for
others. A few limits of 10-to-15 inch trout were taken by anglers using Pistol
Petes and power bait. Fishing for perch was good using worms.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest as of Monday was 60cfs. Trout fishing
was fair-to-good for anglers using worms, spinners, stimulators and humpys. Fishing
at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair for anglers using Pistol Petes and corn/salmon
egg combinations.
CLAYTON LAKE: Fishing was good from the bank and from boats for anglers
fishing for trout and walleye. Best baits were worms, power bait and crank
baits. Most of the trout caught were in the 12-to-16 inch range. We had no
reports on other species.
CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing
for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was good this past week. Although most
of the fish caught were small, anglers did well using sweet beavers, crank
baits, senkos, jerk baits, poppers and worms. Walleye
fishing was fair for anglers trolling crank baits and spinner/worm rigs and casting
grubs and tubes in the brush. Fishing for white bass was fair using crank baits,
grubs, top water lures and sassy shad. Night fishing for catfish was good using
liver, shrimp, stink bait and night crawlers. Fishing for bluegill was good
using worms and poppers. A few crappie were taken by
anglers using minnows and jigs.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout
fishing was fair this past week for anglers using stimulators, salmon eggs and
copper john barrs.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Fishing was slow for some but good for others this past
week. Some anglers reported good catches of trout and kokanee while using
Pistol Petes, Panther Martins tipped with power bait and wooly buggers. They
were drifting and trolling at depths of 6-to-10 feet. A few trout were also
taken by anglers using power bait and power eggs. Fishing for perch was fair
for anglers using worms.
HOPEWELL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was rated as slow-to-fair
at both lakes. Best baits were Pistol Petes, ants, elk hair caddis and power
bait.
MAXWELL LAKES Trout fishing picked up considerably
this past week. Anglers did well fishing from the bank and using power bait,
salmon eggs, spoons and spinners.
MCALLISTER LAKE Due to poor water quality, the lake
will remain closed until further notice.
MONASTERY LAKE:
Trout fishing was fair-to-good for
anglers using corn, power bait, salmon eggs and small spinners.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good
for anglers using yellow power bait, salmon eggs, spinners, spoons, hoppers, Pistol
Petes and worms.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow near the town
of Pecos as of Monday morning was 109cfs. Trout fishing was good using
spinners, orange and yellow stimulators, elk hair caddis, night crawlers and
wooly buggers.
RED RIVER: Water
flow below the hatchery was 221cfs. Trout fishing was fair using spinners,
wooly buggers, hoppers and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE: The
water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 1,710cfs. Trout fishing
was slow again this week but there were a few fish taken by anglers using night
crawlers, wooly buggers and spinners. There were a few northern pike taken by
anglers using jerk baits. We had no reports on other species.
SHUREE PONDS: The ponds opened for fishing today.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was good using jigs and Rat-L-Traps for northern
pike up to 30 inches. Fishing was fair-to-good using worms and cut bait for
channel catfish and mud cats. A few largemouth bass were taken by anglers using
jigs.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout
fishing was slow-to-fair this past week. Anglers did best using garlic cheese
and salmon eggs. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were taken by anglers
using night crawlers and liver. The lake level continues to drop.
STUBBLEFIELD: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Night fishing continued
to be good this past week for anglers fishing for catfish, white bass, crappie
and walleye. Best baits for the catfish were stink bait, liver and night
crawlers. The walleye were caught by anglers using minnows, suspending jerk
baits and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs. White bass and crappie were taken
by anglers using minnows, jigs, grubs and top water lures. Fishing for
largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair for anglers fishing early and late
in the day and using top water lures and jerk baits. Fishing for bluegill was
fair-to-good using worms.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing slowed a bit this past
week but was still rated as good by most anglers. Fishing for smallmouth bass
was good using Sammy 100s, tubes, grubs, poppers and brown bunny
leeches. The bass were found in 4-to-15 feet of water. Fishing was good using
Pointer 78s, Bevy Shad, Reef Runners, Double Whammys tipped with Gulp night
crawlers, bottom bouncer/worm combinations and fat head minnows for walleye.
Anglers reported good success on the flats and on brushy points. Fishing was
fair using shrimp, night crawlers and liver for catfish. A few rainbow and
brown trout were taken by anglers trolling for walleye at the upper end of the
lake.
ALBUQUERQUE
AREA DRAINS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using rainbow trout
colored soft swim baits and in line spinners for tiger musky. A few catfish
were taken by anglers using shrimp and liver. Fishing was slow-to-fair using
power bait, worms and spinners for trout.
CANJILON LAKES:
We had no reports from anglers
this week.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday
morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 711cfs and 897cfs
respectively. The flow below El Vado may be reduced to 200cfs this week. Fishing
along both stretches of river was fair this past week for anglers using night
crawlers, spinners, salmon eggs and power bait for a mix of brown and rainbow
trout.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using
sweet beavers, crank baits and top water lures for largemouth bass and
smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow-to-fair
for anglers using liver, night crawlers and shrimp for catfish. A few white
bass were taken by anglers using crank baits, top water lures and tubes.
EL VADO LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using night crawlers,
spoons, spinners and power bait. We had good reports from anglers fishing the
upper end of the lake and from those fishing near the dam.
FARMINGTON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: Trout
fishing was rated as fair this past week. A few anglers took home limits of
trout while others managed two or three. Best baits were Pistol Petes, Panther
Martins and green power bait. There was a good stone fly hatch over the
weekend.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee
and rainbow trout fishing was good this past week for anglers trolling at
depths of 10-to-17 feet. They did well using Cripplures, Panther Martins and
Double Whammys tipped with corn. The fish ranged in size from 10-to-18 inches. Fishing
from the bank was fair for anglers using corn and worms for rainbow trout.
Fishing for lake trout was slow.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of
Monday morning was 19cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez, the
San Antonio, the East Fork, the Guadalupe and the Cebolla was very good for
anglers using parachute adams, hoppers, royal wulffs, copper
john barrs, small gold and silver spinners, worms and salmon eggs.
LAGUNA Del
CAMPO: (Burns Canyon Lake) We had no reports from anglers this week.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this
week.
MCGAFFEY LAKE: Trout fishing was very good this
past week for anglers fishing near the dam and using salmon eggs, power bait
and worms. Most of the action was midday. Fishing for catfish was slow but
there were a few taken by anglers fishing at night and using worms, dough bait
and liver.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing
was fair for anglers using jigs and tubes for crappie on the Pine arm, in Francis
Canyon and La Jara Canyon. Fishing for
largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair for anglers using tubes, crank baits,
senkos, worms, spinners, wooly buggers and top water lures. Fishing for
northern pike was fair-to-good using crank baits, jerk baits, buzz baits and
spinner baits. Anglers reported catching pike on the San Juan arm, the Pine arm
and on the main lake. Fishing for trout and kokanee was fair-to-good trolling
kokanee killers, Double Whammys, Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn at
depths of 15-to-42 feet. Fishing for
bluegill was fair for anglers using worms and poppers.
RAMAH LAKE: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
SAN JUAN: Water
flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was at 537cfs. Trout fishing was
fair-to-good using streamers, wooly buggers, wooly worms, San Juan worms, chamois
leeches, BWOs and parachute adams. Fishing through the bait waters was fair
using night crawlers, spinners, salmon eggs and jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: We had no
reports from anglers this week.
SEVEN SPRINGS
BROOD POND: It’s just for kids under 12 and
the trout fishing was good again this past week. Best baits were Gulp eggs, spinners
and power bait.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was fair-to-good using worms for bluegill, stink bait and cat food for catfish and tubes, worms and spinners for bass. Trout fishing was fair using worms, Pistol Petes and Gulp eggs. At the Catch and Release Pond trout fishing was fair for anglers using parachute adams, scuds, hoppers, Griffith’s gnats and leeches.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Fishing was slow for all
species.
BILL EVANS
LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
BURN LAKE: Fishing
was slow.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing
was slow but a few white bass were taken by anglers trolling crank baits and
spinner/worm rigs. A few walleye were
taken by anglers using minnows, crank baits, jigs and grubs. We had no reports
on other species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Striped
bass fishing was fair-to-good this past week for anglers using live shiners and
gizzard shad. A few were also taken by anglers using top water lures and large
crank baits. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair
using top water lures, spinner baits, jerk baits, grubs, swim baits, worms,
tubes and senkos. Anglers were flipping the salt cedars with the grubs, tubes
and senkos. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits and spinner/worm rigs for
white bass, walleye and a few crappie. Anglers
trolling also picked up a few largemouth bass. Fishing was good using night
crawlers, liver, shrimp and Gulp crawlers for catfish.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species.
GILA RIVER: Water
flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 38cfs. We had no reports from
anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: We had
no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing
was slow but a few walleye were taken by anglers using live shiners.
QUEMADO LAKE: Trout
fishing was fair for anglers using Pistol Petes and orange, yellow and
chartreuse power bait. A few tiger musky were caught by anglers using swim
baits.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant
Butte on Monday was 2,690cfs. Fishing on
the river below Caballo was slow-to-fair using live shiners, grubs and night
crawlers for a mixed bag of catfish, walleye and white bass.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: We
had no reports from anglers this week.
BONITO LAKE: Effective
July 2, the lake will reopen to fishing. All forest service stage II
restrictions will be in effect. For more information on restrictions, contact
the Lincoln National Forest.
BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BOTTOMLESS
LAKES: Fishing
was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and
release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several
fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout
fishing was good for anglers using spinners, Pistol Petes, power bait, corn and
salmon eggs.
JAL LAKE: Fishing was slow.
LAKE VAN: We had no reports from
anglers this week.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was
1,440cfs. Access to the area below Sumner Lake was closed due to high water
release but is scheduled to reopen later this week.
PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers
this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday
was 1.1cfs. Trout fishing was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was
good this past week in spite of lower, murky water conditions. Anglers did well
trolling crank baits and casting grubs, jigs and tubes around brush in the main
channel for a mix of largemouth bass, crappie and walleye. Last Friday, Steve
Talmadge and his son Tyler along with Chuck Balduini and his daughter Mackenzie
landed several big crappie, good size smallmouth and
largemouth and a few small walleye while using tubes. We had no reports on
other species. As of Monday the water release had stopped and the boat ramp was
open and in good shape.
SUMNER LAKE: As of Monday, water was still
being released. Fishing from boats and from the bank this past week was
fair-to-good using spinner baits, crank baits and tubes for largemouth bass and
smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair trolling bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs
and casting grubs at the mouth of the Alamogordo arm for walleye. The walleye
ranged in size from 15-to-17 inches. The water was quite murky.
Crews stocked 21,801
averaging 10.1 inches in length in the following waters: CEBOLLA RIVER,
CHARETTE
LAKE-Lower, CIMARRON RIVER-West of Cimarron, CIMARRON RIVER
GRAVEL PIT LAKES,
COSTILLA CREEK, COW CREEK, COYOTE CREEK-Near Guadalupita,
COYOTE CREEK
POND, EAGLE ROCK LAKE, FAWN LAKES, FENTON LAKE, GALLINAS
ICE POND,
GALLINAS RIVER-Near Las Vegas, LA JUNTA CREEK, LITTLE RIO GRANDE,
LOS PINOS
RIVER, MONASTERY LAKE, MORA-Pecos River Drainage, PECOS RIVER-Cowles
to Village of Pecos,
RED RIVER-Above Questa, RIO LAS TRAMPAS & RIO PUEBLO.
In addition,
crews stocked 85,760 fingerling kokanee salmon in Heron Reservoir.
