New Mexico FISHING REPORT
July 19, 2008
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
CATCHES OF THE WEEK:
Ute Lake: On July 15, Patrick Haney of Albuquerque caught a 5.04 pound walleye. He was using a bottom bouncer rig. On the same day, Jason Paulk of Portales caught a 7.53 largemouth bass. He was also using a bottom bouncer rig and fishing for walleye. On July 20, Don McWhorter of Dalhart, TX caught a 5.24 pound largemouth bass. He was using a top water lure.
Elephant Butte Lake: On July 18, Russell Whited caught a 20 pound striped bass. He was using a top water lure. On July 19, Mike Cones of Espanola caught a 4.0 largemouth bass. On the same day, David Behm of Albuquerque caught a 5 pound walleye. He was using a jig tipped with a smallie beaver. On July 20, Fritz Stover of Santa Fe caught a 4.12 pound largemouth bass. He was using a tube.
Santa Rosa Lake: On July 17, Eldon McWhorter of Bosque Farms caught a 12 pound channel catfish. He was fishing for bass and using a spinner bait. On July 19, Gary Thomas of McIntosh caught a 4.7 pound largemouth bass. He was using a tube. On July 20, Tom Wasson of Albuquerque caught a 3.7 pound smallmouth bass. He was using a tube. On July 20, David Thibeau of Edgewood caught a 26 inch 5 pound walleye and Martha Thibeau also of Edgewood caught a 24 inch 4.5 pound walleye. They were using night crawlers.
Navajo Lake: On July 19, Jordan Marquez, age 7 of Albuquerque caught a 21 inch northern pike. He was trolling a silver Bomber on the Pine arm of the lake.
Maxwell Lake 13: This one was reported a bit late but thought it was worth mentioning. On July 6, Denny Marquez caught a 24.5 inch rainbow trout. He was using a stone fly imitation.
NORTHEAST AREA
CHARETTE LAKES: Trout fishing on the lower lake was good for anglers using power bait, Pistol Petes and flies under a bubble in the evening hours. Fishing was good using worms for perch.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest as of Monday was 13cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using spinners, yellow sallies, hoppers, worms, elk hair caddis and humpys. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair for anglers using Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.
CLAYTON LAKE: Trout fishing was very good this past week. Anglers reported catching several limits of trout while using night crawlers. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.
CONCHAS LAKE: Anglers reported another good week for fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. The numbers were great but most of the fish were small. Best baits were top water lures, crank baits, tubes, worms, jerk baits and salt craws. Walleye fishing was fair for anglers trolling crank baits and bottom bouncer/worm or minnow rigs. Fishing for white bass was fair using crank baits, grubs and top water lures. Night fishing for catfish was fair using cut bait and night crawlers. Fishing for bluegill was fair using worms and poppers. We had no reports on other species.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using elk hair caddis, garlic cheese, salmon eggs and spinners.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Kokanee fishing was fair-to-good for anglers trolling kokanee killers, needlefish, Rooster Tails and Panther Martins. Most of the fish were taken by anglers fishing at depths of 18-to-25 feet. Anglers fishing from anchored boats and using power bait caught several rainbow trout. Fishing from the bank was fair for anglers using power bait. Fishing was fair using worms for perch.
HOPEWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using elk hair caddis, black gnat and black ant patterns and salmon eggs.
LAKE MALOYA/
LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was rated as fair-to-good at Lake Maloya and Lake Alice this past week. Anglers did well using salmon eggs, power bait, home made dough baits, Pistol Petes and bead head wooly buggers. The best reports came from anglers fishing early and late in the day.
MAXWELL LAKES Trout fishing was fair-to-good using red power bait, night crawlers and wet flies. A few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers and stink bait.
MCALLISTER LAKE Due to poor water quality, the lake will remain closed until further notice.
MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using cheese flavored Gulp bait, Pistol Petes, corn and small spinners.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good for anglers fishing from boats, fishing deep and using spinners and bead head nymphs. Fishing from the bank was fair for anglers casting beyond the grass lines and using salmon eggs and power bait.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow near the town of Pecos as of Monday morning was 74cfs. Trout fishing this past week was very good using night crawlers, salmon eggs, night crawlers, spinners, stimulators, royal wulffs elk hair caddis and copper john barrs.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 169cfs. Trout fishing was good using spinners, wooly buggers, stimulators, salmon eggs and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 633cfs. Trout fishing was fair using jerk baits, night crawlers, wooly buggers and spinners. A few northern pike were taken by anglers using large bunny leeches and in line spinners. We had no reports on other species.
SHUREE PONDS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair using crank baits, jerk baits and live bait for northern pike and an occasional largemouth bass. A few catfish were taken by anglers using live bait and cut bait. The lake level was dropping as water was being taken for irrigation.
STORRIE LAKE: Fishing for catfish was fair-to-good using corn and worms and fishing at night. Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using pink power bait and pink eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.
STUBBLEFIELD: We had no reports from anglers this week.
UTE LAKE: Fishing this past week was very good for anglers using crank baits, top water lures, grubs and spinners for white bass. The white bass were schooled up and several limits were taken. Fishing was good using bottom bouncer/worm and bottom bouncer/minnow rigs at depths of 16-to-20 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair-to-good using top water lures, tubes, senkos and crank baits for largemouth bass and a few smallmouth bass. Fishing for all other species was slow.
NORTHWEST AREA
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for anglers using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, minnows, grubs, bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs and jigs for walleye and smallmouth bass. Several bass were also taken by anglers using top water lures. Fishing for catfish was slow-to-fair and best at night for anglers using night crawlers, minnows, stink bait and hot dogs. We had no reports on other species.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing pressure was very light this past week and fishing was rated as slow for all species.
CANJILON LAKES: Trout fishing on the upper lake was fair for anglers using Pistol Petes, spinners and fly and bubble combinations. The lower lakes were quite murky.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 200cfs and 401cfs respectively. Last weekend below El Vado fishing was quite good using night crawlers, Panther Martins and bead head nymphs for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using worms and hoppers for trout.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was fair using crank baits, tubes and white grubs for white bass and smallmouth bass. A few smallmouth bass were also taken by anglers using top water lures. Fishing at night was fair using minnows and night crawlers for catfish. A few northern pike were caught by anglers using jerk baits and top water lures. A few walleye were taken by anglers using minnows and crank baits.
EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers fishing near the dam and using night crawlers, power bait, spinners and jerk baits.
FARMINGTON LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE: Fishing picked up some from the previous week as anglers did well using night crawlers, salmon eggs, sparkle power bait and Pistol Petes for a mix of rainbow and brown trout. Most of the browns were taken by anglers fishing the northeast corner of the lake.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee fishing was quite good during the week but slowed a bit over this past weekend. Anglers were trolling Cripplures, rainbow colored needle fish and Panther Martins tipped with corn. The fish were deeper than the previous week and were taken at depths of 20-to-30 feet. Anglers fishing for kokanee also caught a few rainbows. Fishing for lake trout was slow.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 29cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez, Rio Las Vacas, Cebolla, San Antonio and East Fork was fair for anglers using parachute adams, elk hair caddis royal humpys, small stone fly imitations, small gold and silver spinners, worms and salmon eggs.
LAGUNA Del CAMPO: (Burns Canyon Lake) We had no reports from anglers this week.
MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
MCGAFFEY LAKE: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish taken by anglers using corn and dough bait.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing for kokanee and rainbow trout was fair-to-good for anglers using Panther Martins, Z Rays, Rooster Tails, Double Whammies and kokanee killers tipped with corn. They were trolling at depths of 20-to-45 feet on the main lake. Fishing was fair-to-good using jerk baits, crank baits, spinner baits and buzz baits for northern pike. Some of the best pike action was on the upper end of the San Juan arm. Fishing was fair using top water lures, tubes, power worms, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and a few largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using small jigs, worms and poppers for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.
RAMAH LAKE: Fishing was slow with just a few small bluegill caught by anglers using salmon eggs and stink bait. The water was quite low.
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was at 496cfs. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using emergers, orange sparkle worms, streamers, dead chickens, BWOs and parachute adams. Fishing through the bait waters was fair-to-good using night crawlers, Pistol Petes, spinners, salmon eggs and jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using spinners, Pistol Petes under a bubble, worms and salmon eggs.
SEVEN SPRINGS
BROOD POND: It’s just for kids under 12 and the trout fishing was fair-to-good this past week. Best baits were power bait, Gulp eggs and salmon eggs.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using worms, power bait, shrimp and stink bait for bluegill and catfish. At the Catch and Release Pond trout fishing was fair for anglers using scuds, egg patterns, dead chickens, Griffith’s gnats and leeches.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON: Fishing was slow for all species.
BILL EVANS LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BURN LAKE: Fishing was slow.
CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair using crank baits, jigs, top water lures and grubs for white bass and a few walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using minnows and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.
ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing was good using tubes, sweet beavers, power worms, Sammy 100s, buzz baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Several good size bass were taken off main lake points and in cuts in or near salt cedars. Fishing slowed a bit from the previous week but was still good using crank baits, spinners, tubes and top water lures for white bass and walleye. Striped bass fishing was a bit sporadic but reported as good by some anglers using live bait and top water lures. Fishing was good using cut bait, shrimp and Gulp crawlers for catfish. Most of the catfish action was at the upper end of the lake.
ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was slow but a few catfish were taken by anglers using night crawlers, liver and dough baits. We had no reports on other species.
GILA RIVER: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 182cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE ROBERTS: We had no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, power bait and night crawlers.
RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 552cfs. Fishing on this stretch of river was fair using shrimp, liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using white and chartreuse grubs for white bass and a few walleye. A few trout were taken by anglers using wooly buggers and spinners. Fishing on the river below Caballo was slow. A few catfish were taken by anglers using shiners.
SNOW LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BONITO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good early in the day using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes.
BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BOTTOMLESS
LAKES: Fishing was slow. Stocking has been suspended due to a golden algae bloom.
BRANTLEY LAKE: Anglers are to practice catch and release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.
CARLSBAD
MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
GRINDSTONE
RESERVOIR: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, worms and power bait. A few fish were also taken on spinners and Pistol Petes.
JAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.
LAKE VAN: Fishing was slow for all species.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was .26cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
PERCH LAKE: Fishing was fair using worms for bass. Anglers fishing with worms also reported catching a few trout.
RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 8cfs. Trout fishing was slow but a few fish were taken by anglers using salmon eggs and wet flies.
SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was very good this past weekend using tubes, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and top water lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Most of the bass were taken out of less than 8 feet of water. Fishing was good using crank baits, tubes, grubs, minnows, jerk baits and bottom bouncer/worm rigs for walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using spinner baits, hot dogs and liver. We had no reports on other species.
SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using top water lures, tubes and crank baits for largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers, minnows and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Stocking Report:
Crews stocked 23,075 rainbow trout averaging 10.4 inches in length in the following waters: BONITO LAKE, BRAZOS RIVER, CHAMA RIVER-Above and Below El Vado, COSTILLA CREEK, COW CREEK, EAGLE ROCK LAKE, GALLINAS ICE POND, GALLINAS RIVER-Near Las Vegas, GOOSE LAKE, GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR, LAGUNA DEL CAMPO-Burns Lake, LOS PINOS RIVER, MONASTERY LAKE, MORA-Pecos River Drainage, PECOS RIVER-Cowles to Village of Pecos, RED RIVER-Above and Below Questa, RED RIVER HATCHERY POND, RIO PUEBLO, SANTA CRUZ RESERVOIR, SHUREE PONDS & SIPAPU POND.
